$80 for a local Ambassador is great--100% worth it. Don't mess around with bell repair if you can help it. Buying opportunistically is the way to go--whatever's cheap and local and in reasonable shape. You can look for a better horn in the future if you want one.

A Conn Director, Holton 602,Getzen 300, 400 Jupiter 600 trumpets are good choices for used student trumpets.
The Conn 17 A coperian cornet is a good choice too,it sounds like a trumpet. It has a beautiful copper color.
The Getzen 400, Jupiter 600 trumpetd have 1st slide thumb saddles. The others don't.
You should be able to find any of these trumpets in this price range on ebay.

Thank you, I appreciate the specific horns this is very helpful.

I'd like to sincerely thank everyone for their input, it gave me a lot to consider and I found it all incredibly helpful.

An update: I found a recently cleaned and serviced Holton 602 being sold on ebay with 4 mouthpieces, a case, and a straight mute and I was able to grab it for $78 before shipping. It appears to have been listed by a young musician saving up for a different instrument and he even included a short video of him playing the horn, so I get the idea it's been looked after by someone who has at least a basic understanding of instrument maintenance so I'm feeling like I got a good deal!

Thanks again everyone for your time and thoughtful advice and opinions!

Holton 602 trumpet, an excellent choice. Very underrated horn. Congratulations.
If the trumpet doesn't a 1st slide thumb saddle, easy fix for a tech. Had one installed on a Holton 602 trumpet.
