I’ve never had to worry about microphones in the past because whoever wanted me to be mic’ed had their own equipment. Now I’m in the market for both hand/stand, and bell mounted. I don’t need skywalker studios grade but recording/performance capable. Any ideas where to start? |

Shure SM57 (wired, used with a mike stand) is a fairly safe bet, been around many years.
No knowledge here on wireless or bell mounted wired/wireless.

Hi,
after some "online research" here and there I went for the Shure SM 57 and all the other stuff required (interface, monitors, stand) and I am quite happy about it.
The shure is known for its quality and durability, and the quality of the audio on the interface I have is rather good. No pro stuff just amateur stuff but for some home recording and for some vlogging its great.
Also the shure sm 57 works really nice for voice recording.
cheers.

I use an Electro-Voice RE20 on both trumpet and tenor sax in my home recording studio. Live, I use a Shure Beta98 on the bell for both instruments.
You might also consider a ribbon mic like the MXL R77 or the Art AR5 in studio applications. |

It all depends on what you're doing and what you want to do.
+1 For Ribbons to record (so long as you have a decent preamp too, in my opinion)
+1 for condensers on stage in a horn section, etc. There's better condensers around, but SM57s are an industry standard, and to be honest, most sound techs will know how to get a halfway decent sound with those mics, but not necessarily with some other, more deluxe mics.
I'll add in the option of a PiezoBarrel mouthpiece, too. If you use effects in loud bands and want to avoid feedback and spill, this is the best option and they are super cheap. I'm hoping I'll get a video up of demonstrating this with the Empress Effects Zoia soon. |
