|
|
I have a copy of an Eastman Jazz Ensemble live recording I've had for over 20 years. This recording is a trumpet feature and has as guest soloists Allen Vizzutti, Vince DiMartino, Jeff Tyzik and Lew Soloff.
Does anyone know when this concert was recorded?
This was the first time I ever heard the EJE; they play quite well. I'm also wondering who was playing lead trumpet in the band. Very solid.
Thanks for any information!

Tim-
Is this the concert that Vinnie DiMartino did "Bustling?" If so, I think it was somewhere between 1981-1985. A friend of mine went to U Rochester and went to the concert. If I recall correctly, Brian Scanlon was in the sax section, and in the featured sax group "Saxology". Byron Stripling may have been on lead trumpet, but I'm not sure.
I'll try to find the program he sent me and get back to you.

Is this the one that Vizzutti played "smallfrye" on? Man, Eastman was loaded back then. Vinny, Allen, Byron Stripling, in the classical relm George Vosburgh was there. Man, what a studio!!!! _________________ Freelance Performer/Teacher WV, PA, MD, and OH http://www.neil-king.com

Yes, that's the one!
Cool, I never knew that was Stripling playing lead. Too bad he turned out a nothing player!
The only differences I notice on my cassette:
I don't have the piece entitled "Skylights," and I also have two other pieces you didn't mention. One is the Vizzutti feature entitled "Jamie" and the closer was "Viz Biz."
I'm sure my copy came indirectly from DiMartino. I borrowed it from a friend who borrowed it from a friend who was a student at the University of Kentucky while Vince was there.
Thanks for the info Garry!

Hey Tim-
My cassette has Viz Biz on it. It's a handwritten label, so i don't know if the printed program accurately reflected what was actually performed. But, who cares? What a great concert, huh?
I got to go listen to it again. It's been years!!

I have a cassette of this concert - dug it out and listened again! I listened so many times I thought I would wear out the tape.
Garry, any chance you still have that program? I'd love to see it. This recording was just the most amazing thing for a kid going into high school as I was at the time. Had no idea Byron Stripling was playing lead.
I found an article in the local Rochester paper after the show: Students take jazz show _________________ Conn Connstellation 38B (1960)
