I thought they only made the M2 in nickel silver ?
The M is a strange beast. At first I loved it, but in the end I had difficult time to use it long-term.
In a symphonic setting it is too shallow and in big band the backbore is too open (it is more open than the L/L2).
The best use I had for it was for pops on the C trumpet, it is a 3M in brass.
The L is deeper than the M, but the backbore is a tiny bit smaller. The have M have the same "volume in sound" than the L by having a bigger backbore and a smaller cup depth.
I personally don't like their bronze mouthpieces (got a 3XL2 in bronze), but it's definitely a matter of personal taste. My horns are "not that bright", it might be part of the reason why.
If you want a "snappy" mouthpiece, don't go for bronze, it will make the job difficult. If you want to do both mellow and snappy, go for a brass mouthpiece.
I currently have on order a 7L2 in brass and a 7M2 in nickel silver (plus a flugelhorn 7L in brass) after having tried all almost all the 7 line (I find their 3 rim a little too large now).
The only difference between the L and L2 (according to Adam) is the throat entrance. The L is like a huge funnel while the L2 is more a hole at the bottom of a bowl.
The slots on the L2 are a little more defined, which I like. _________________ Bb: Schagerl James Morrison, Van Laar B7

I’m sorry, you’re correct. I have the M not the M2.
I have the 3LB (which I love), 3M and 3S.
I sold the L2 |

The S is pretty wild. It’s the piece I don’t really get a chance to use very often buts is super fun to play on. Maybe if I had some commercial type musical theater job I would use it more. While the mid/low register is decently big I don’t think it’s especially “pretty”. Upstairs it is very easy to play and again, quite a big sound. |

That's what makes silver a good option for M cups I think as it focuses the sound. I've mistaken my 7M silver for the 7L brass a few times and even failed a blind fold test in the practice room. It's a terrific big band mouthpiece for 2nd chair and solos. _________________ Sima, Kanstul 1525 Flugel and Kanstul pocket trumpet. Olds Super |

How do you decide on the HC vs non HC throat when choosing one of these pieces? _________________ Adams A1 Tpt.

Just go with the open throat. That’s kinda the whole vibe of the mouthpiece. I think the tighter throats are designed for people who are really used to pieces with a lot of resistance, and like that feeling. |

Just noticed that the plating on the inside op my 2L2 is coming off.
Only a little spot currently, near the "shoulder" (entry of the throat).
So now I wonder if there is something I can do to prevent it getting bigger.
Anyone has good advice on this issue? _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-9335CHS + Yamaha YTR-6335H

Contact Lotus. They’ll replace it. |
