Fixing my 1 issue with the Getzen 900DLX

Love the horn. One complaint: the screw used to ensure the 3rd slide doesn't fall out is too loose and vibrates and works its way open while I'm playing so that it's no longer screwed in far enough to catch the flange on the end of the slide. I've had the slide fall out a few times after playing the horn.

I've thought about just putting a blob of rubber cement or something similar on the screw to hold it in place, but don't really like the idea of putting something on the surface of the horn itself.

What about one of those old Getzen plastic 3rd slide stops? I had one on my Getzen Severinson back in the 70s and 80s. Anyone know the distance between the 2 braces on the old Getzen 3rd slides those slide stops were made to fit? Would that fit the 900DLX?

If anyone has one handy and is willing to measure it I'd appreciate it. Distance on the braces of the DLX center-to-center is 3 3/4".

I had the same 'problem' with my Eterna since I miss that screw (never got it, bought the horn 2nd hand). I put a small chord over the 3th tuningslide ring through the space between the brace and the valve. So thight that is won't come loose during transport but loose enough to lift it over the ring for cleaning purposes.
Also you could -indeed- put some locknut locktite on the threading of the screw

I think the old plastic slide stopper is an absolutely elegant feature; apparently even Getzen doesn't agree with me. 😎

Sad to say, the whole delrin piece is only about 3.5 inches long; the vertical braces have to be pretty close to 2.5 inches apart to work, referencing my 700.

I have the new design on my 800 cornet, and the screw behaves well. But I had that problem with the third valve pinky ring on my 700. I didn't want to mess with chemicals, so I wrapped a narrow strip of teflon tape around the end of the screw, which seems to work.

Have you tried applying some (thick) slide grease to the screw? That may hold it in place.

Nevermind, just read Shifty's comment...that'll work much better.

Nixer - My Edwards trumpet came with small o-rings to keep the screws from backing out. Not sure if they are original since I purchased the horn used. I believe the stop screws are similar or the same as the Getzens. The o-rings have been working great.

Shifty and Ronnman definitely hit the nail on the head. Both are easy, non-damaging ways to keep the screw in. I have experienced the same issues with both my horns and I did the Teflon tape with success. The o rings is certainly a more refined method. Years ago I lost my third valve slide stop screw on my Edwards, but I found my wife had a nice brass colored hair tie that I promptly took and looped over the ring and the 2nd valve slide. I actually really appreciated the mechanical assist with slide always pushing itself back in. I had the horn cleaned recently and they replaced the screw for me and my brass colored hair tie disappeared.[/url]

Why screw (harrumph) with it? You can take the screw out and use a Yamaha Slide Stopper.

I used to play a Getzen 3001 and the screw was just short enough that it was wearing in to the lip of the slide and it would catch on the screw.

To those recommending using a thread-locking compound, I do remind that many are made to be permanent. It might take more looking but some are designed to be removable.

I put a small nitrile o-ring on loose stop screws. Keeps it from backing out and vibrating.

The third-slide screw on my Schilke X4b used to work its way out, allowing the slide to fall off at inopportune times. I was into tropical fish at the time and had several aquariums, so I had quarter-inch air line lying around. A short piece of that tubing, around 3/16", on the screw-head side, so that the tubing was expanded over the base of the screw-head, prevented the screw from ever backing out unexpectedly. No sulfur in the clear tubing, so no issues with tarnish.

I have used red Loctite for such, and it's still proved easily removable. If you are skittish about the red, try the blue version.
