Hmm...tough question. I'd say it's probably Maite Hontelé, even though sadly she doesn't perform anymore.

I love the sound of Alison Balsom and she is really very pleasant to watch!

Really difficult to answer. We have so many great players going solo in videos this year with etudes and other postings, while many of the known soloists, like Alison Balsom mentioned above have been very silent throughout the year.
So I am going to give my top nod to Jim Wilt, TH's MrClean, with a close second to Chris Smith, third to Håkan Hardenberger and fourth to Jack Burt (just for the incredible volume he has produced).

He's been gone for nearly 40 years, but Mendez will always be the player for me.
He was doing things 75 years ago no one could even attempt. His recordings do not do justice to his actual sound.
Doc Severinsen and Phil Smith are remarkable as is Wynton Marsalis.
And then there is a guy named Maynard.

That’s probably the hardest question I’ve had to answer in a while...but probably Chet Baker. I’ve fallen in love with his soulful playing and inflection, as well as his sound.

Peter Evans, for the same reasons. He may not be from the same plane of reality, for that matter.

Mostly it was because she felt the trumpet was becoming too demanding and that she could no longer keep up the effort required to play at the level that she did. Cuba Linda was her final album if I recall correctly. She's living in the Netherlands now working as artistic director for Music Meeting Festival. It's a pity for us, but I think she made the right choice for herself.

Well, playing salsa is certainly demanding and takes a helluva lot of skill if you are going to specialize in it as Maite did. I played a little of it in my younger days but in my 80s the brain just doesn't process the way it did back then so I leave it for the younger cats.
As for Maite, she was damn good and I hate to see talent like that end abruptly.
As you said, pity for us, but she probably made the right decision for herself.

Oh, yeah, I like him , too. I am always fascinated by his embouchure that's sort of a frown with turned down corners. I tried it but couldn't get it to work for me.

I have to give the nod to my former teacher Chris Gekker. He is a phenomenal musician with a tremendous command of the instrument. Chris has recorded a number of new works for trumpet in the chamber music idiom over the past few years by composers like Eric Ewazen, David Snow, and Lance Hulme.

I suppose I have a Los Angeles bias, but Thomas Stevens was such a fine musician. And among today's greats, I think very highly of Thomas Hooten. On the jazz side, Charley Shavers is my favorite.
