Hi!
I know a guy who´s selling a Yamaha 6810 piccolo. The thing is that he bought it in the early 90´s, so I´m hesitating to buy it even though he claims that they were better in those days.
Now I need all good input I can get from the rest of you! How is a 25+ years old 6810 compared to a new one regarding mechanics, being in tune, red rot, brightness and everything else?
Please help me! _________________ " There are no secrets to trumpetplaying - except Practice Your Head Off - and that´s no secret! "

Thank you, Wilder! That´s certainly a helpful answer!
Anyone else who maybe have experienced both older as well as newer 6810´s? _________________ " There are no secrets to trumpetplaying - except Practice Your Head Off - and that´s no secret! "

I played a 90s built 6810 in college in the early 2000s. The sound and intonation were good with the A pipe. I hardly ever played pic in Bb but I vaguely remember the intonation not being as good. I'm fairly certain that has been my experience with all of the pics I've played including the P5-4. I preferred the 6810 to the Getzen 940, Benge Colibri, and the Kanstul Custom Class. The 6810 had better sound and intonation than the Getzen and Kanstul and better intonation than the Benge. The response of the 6810 was better than all 3 of the others, especially the Kanstul. The P5-4 I played for a semester was better in intonation than the 6810 and maybe a little better in response. The sound of the P5-4 is sort of the standard but the 6810 is very good. I even preferred the 6810 for some things. Because of that horn I have a soft spot for the short belled pics. This is to the best of my memory as I haven't played much pic in 20 years
I just realized you asked about comparisons with the newer models. I apologize as I have no experience with the newer model. _________________ Justin Shaw |

Thank you BF for your feedback!
Don´t apologize for not being able to compare.
You have given me the info you have, and that info sure tells me a lot of positive things! I feel even more certain now that the horn is worth the money!
Once again, thank you both for taking the time to answer! _________________ " There are no secrets to trumpetplaying - except Practice Your Head Off - and that´s no secret! "

I have done some tweaks that make YTR-6810 trumpets play amazing. One of our longtime customers swears it transformed his ‘90’s Yamaha piccolo into the finest piccolo he’s owned, and that not an exaggeration.

My 6810 from around 2003 simply plays terrific on both pipes.
Intonation is good and the sound can be very large or medium sized. That will depend on mouthpiece/backbore choice and your style.
I can imagine what James can do to make it even better!
