Are Monette Unity's offered only in gold or do they have conventional silver ones, too? I've looked all over their site and find no answer. Additionally, I eMailed them two days ago and have no response. Thanks.

They are only available in gold plate. The tradition plus and silver series are the only ones in silver plate.

Call the shop/wait for a response from BJ. They’re a custom shop (about 2800 horns in 29 years of business) with a brilliant, expert, and helpful staff - but they’re a small shop. I honestly have no idea how BJ gets through the hundreds of messages he gets through and does phone consults and every other part of his job, but he gets it done and does it among the best in the business.
Which is to say that if you have a particular need for a custom mouthpiece in silver, they can probably arrange that. It won’t be an ‘off the shelf’ UNITY, as Monette top of the line models have always been offered in gold plating - but it’ll be your custom UNITY mouthpiece in silver. It’s true that the Silver Series was offered as an affordable entry line some years ago, and that the Tradition+ series can be ordered through the Monette website in silver or gold. When the special Prana Resonance XLT limited lead series were made available for sale through the website, both Silver and Gold options were available for these, as well.

Thanks. I'll wait for their response. I'm in no hurry.

This is just personal, but I reel at any merchants' effort to ""up sale" a product and having a more expensive, unsolicited, gold plate falls into that category to me.

I have not used gold plate in the past and won't pay for "bling" if that's why the gold.

Here's a quote from their Q&A page:
http://monette.net/newsite/mouthpieces_faq.htm
Quote:

Q. Why are Monette mouthpieces gold plated?

A. We finish our mouthpieces in gold because gold is softer and more comfortable on the lips, it holds moisture better, and it protects the mouthpiece better than silver.

As mentioned, Monette is a custom shop and everything is made to order, so they will make you whatever you want. There are silver Prana mouthpieces out in the wild...

That said, I would not expect them to give you a discount for ordering silver instead of gold. And because the Unity's are in general production, a custom plated Unity will likely add to the wait time.

I will add that, for me, I definitely enjoy the softer feel of gold, and I used gold on my Stork's and Curry's before I switched to Monette.

The other benefit, for me is that the mouthpiece warms up much more quickly and retains that heat for much longer.

Each person will need to decide if that's worth it to them, but, on the Monette's specifically, it's a nice additional perk when I consider the other benefits of the mouthpiece for my playing.

Thanks.

RE, that tells me what I want to know.

FWIW, I've test-run mouthpieces in gold and didn't like the feel. What I remembered is that they seemed a little bit "slippery" and I was aware of the feel. I want equipment that I don't know is there when I use it.

Chances are you'll pay more for a Silver plated version because it is a custom order. So if you are just hoping to save some money on a Monette, I doubt this would help any.

I think this would be the case as well.

For what it's worth, kehaulani, I doubt you will have any trouble acclimating to a gold-plated mouthpiece. It really only feels different initially, in my opinion.

Not trying to save money. Just don't like gold.
