At brass room were small concrete boxes that were, to be blunt an OHS disaster.
To cope, we did the following:
Stood against a wall and blew into the space.
Played softly
Wore ear plugs loosely
Took every opportunity to practice elsewhere, like the park next door.
My home studio is a 14x14 room, plastered brick walls, decorative plaster ceiling, wood floors. Pretty boomy when empty. I e added a floor rug, soft furniture and lots of shapes (desk, instrument cases, book cases etc. Now it’s pretty good, although my smart watch keeps telling me I’m in a loud, dangerous environment…

Not wanting to sidetrack or anything, but have any of you experienced that the use of ear-plugs actually made your sound seem...louder?
For context, my practice room consists of many of the above mentioned things to reduce reverb (rugs, drapes, foam panels, etc.). I tend to to play softly, but by advice I tried using earplugs recently. And my experience was that it didn't seem to really reduce the sound level I was hearing, but it almost felt like it was increased a bit? My guess is that a lot of the sound of the trumpet is transferred through vibrations through the mouthpiece. Fwiw a practice mute has a similar effect: I don't experience a great reduction in sound even though supposedly it has a large effect to those around me.
Anyone else experience something similar?

Nomally, there's a certain amount of phase cancellation due to the sound of your voice or instrument coming at your eardrums both internally and externally., so it effectively reduces the total sound of yourself that you hear. With earplugs you're getting the full sound from te inside with nothing from the outside to cancel it.
There's probably a different name for it than "phase cancellation" but it's the same effect. |
