Perfect embouchure. Master of digital patterns. To me Clark has the all time most distinctive trumpet/flugelhorn style and sound in jazz. Nobody sounds like Clark except Clark. You know it's Clark in a nanosecond. I was privileged to perform with him on three concert performances back in the 1970's. What a fun player and inspiration he was!

And it appears as if he`s circular breathing on alot of the long phrases too..What control, taste, sound, sense of swing, elements of surprise..the whole thing; Clark was a master, and a great guy on top of all of that.
Got to perform with him a few times, and he always came across as "One of the guys" until he started playing and jaws would drop everywhere..One of the greats!

Clark was so efficient and made it look effortless.
I had the opportunity to perform with him once as well in 77. I was at a community college that had a music program. Clark's lead trombonist Sonny Costanzo from his big band was the dept. head. He brought Clark and his quintet in for a concert. We had quite a few of Clark's charts in the jazz ensemble library. At the last minute Sonny asked Clark if we could do a few numbers with him. Clark graciously said yes and off we went. We played a few charts with him and he just tore it up. Sweetheart of a guy as well.

Damn. I hope they're the welcome-home band heaven. I'd rather listen to that than almost every other good thing.

He was the very best and Johnny loved him. There was a line on the Simpsons TV show where little Lisa was dragging her baritone home after getting kicked out of band for playing too many jazz licks and Homer was out front of the house and saw her saying,"what's the matter Lisa", and Lisa said, "Dad, why didn't Clark Terry get the Tonight Show?" Pretty inside stuff.

He had a happy, bouncy style and made it sound effortless.

Thanks for sharing that.
One of my favorite CDs is Clarke Terry, Freddy Hubbard and Dizzy playing the blues together. I have already watch your YouTube clip several times.

What a player, and from what I've read from those who knew and played with him, he was also a great human being. Sadly, gone too soon.
