|
|
Are there any forums or websites dedicated to repairing and restoring vintage brass instruments? If so, please post links. I have done various kinds of metalworking for decades, and I am just getting into restoring old horns.
Currently, I am looking for suggestions on how to get small dents out of the valve slides. I have some ideas, but I'd like to hear from the experts.
Thanks! |

NAPBIRT - National Assoc. of Ban Instrument Repair Technicians, is a worthwhile organization. They have an archive of their journal, online clinics, and they are back to holding in-person workshops.
I have an article on restoration coming out in the July-Aug. journal.
I believe they have a lower membership rate for non-professionals.

While it is far from "dedicated to" your topic, you would probably benefit from Robb Stewart's site. https://www.robbstewart.com/ _________________ Ron Berndt

Go for it !
Check back in five years...........
After getting $4,000.00 worth of tools, ruining several horns you will be on your way !

HA!
Now don't be discouraging, as long as the OP works on junk instruments, of which there are thousands, all will be well.
Just to relate a short story of one of my early repair experiences:
In the first year or two after I apprenticed to my colleague at his old shop in San Mateo, CA, I rebuilt my first trumpet. It was a Conn 6B Victor, and I was really proud of my work after assembling the horn. Only problem was when I went to pull the tuning slide - I had soldered it shut! _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

I hear ya. Nothing teaches like taking it apart and starting over.....,
I think getting various tools, balls and mandrills stuck was an early frustration, cracking slide crooks while removing dents, soldering one thing and another falls off, OY.......... _________________ "There is no necessity for deadly strife" A. Lincoln 1860

Yep. I'm no.stranger to climbing learning curves. Fixing horns is just my latest attempt at self-flagelation. I got an old Besson Stratford off eBay for next to nothing. If I ruin it, no big loss. If it turns out nicely, that will be a bonus. |
