Hello - I don’t really know much of anything about trumpets but I play in a rock band that needs some trumpet on a couple songs. What do you suggest I buy? It won’t get a ton of use but I’ll also need to perform with it in front of medium size crowds so I want it to at least sound decent. Thanks! |

Find a good used Bach TR-200 with a heavier bell. They have a tendency to have heavier bells on certain ones, and those horns light up. I gave mine to a student, and wish I had it back. The sound sticks together better in a rock band setting than some other, lighter horns that are great when recording, but can crack with extreme volumes and odd acoustics.
The other choice is a very old Getzen Severinsen Eterna. They work very well and can be had for a reasonable price. I've never loaned mine out and likely never will, because...see above!

There are tons of Getzen 300 student trumpets on Ebay right now for $300 (talk about symmetry), and they are VASTLY better than what you will find on Amazon, etc. Additionally, the Getzen 300s are well suited to the sort of back-up horns sound typical in the application you are talking about. Though certainly not the equivalent of a pro horn at 8 times the cost, a Getzen 300 will do everything that is needed for what you are describing, and Getzen has always built "student" to a much higher level. _________________ Ron Berndt

The most important issue here is that its not the horn that will sound decent or not, its the player. So, step one is developing the knowledge of trumpet to sound decent (find a teacher?). After that, there are many options, with the aforementioned 300s being a good one. _________________ Ron Berndt

Just to check: is the OP able to play the trumpet? I think one should not underestimate the effort needed to get up to speed on trumpet even if it’s only for a few bars or a few pieces. Just in case: make sure to get a teacher, if you are not a brass player. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

This, this, this... "I'll practice for a couple days and sound fine..."
I smell trouble.. and poorly played trumpet parts..
How about hiring a trumpet player to cover parts in your band? _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Olds Ambassadors are a great choice; find one in good shape (no red rot, decent valve compression and minimal dents) and you have a time tested student horn that can be used professionally in the right hands. They also play relatively easy, and have a focused, bright sound all while being built like a tank. _________________ "I'm 73 and I'm still learning." - Maurice Murphy

Gotta agree with Brassnose and Zaferis: that's not how the trumpet works. Unlike some instruments like piano, guitar or drums, you have to create the sound yourself using your mouth, and that takes practice. You could probably fool a crowd of non-musicians into thinking you can play guitar or piano with a few months of practice (being able to play say, 2 or 3 chords can make you sound quite nice especially if you sing along), but for trumpet you're out of luck.

If you're unable or unwilling to put in the practice hours, and getting a trumpet player for your gig is not an option, your best chance is probably to get a cheap Chinese copy (you can get them in several colors too) and fake playing while your keyboard player uses their synthesizer to mimic a trumpet sound. |

Thanks for all the responses! I used to play clarinet back in the day but no never played trumpet so I’ll need some lessons for sure. My intent was not to buy a trumpet and think I can just be ready to play on stage right away. I like to learn different instruments so for me it’s a good learning opportunity. I’ve played guitar basically all my life but managed to learn some other instruments as well. And yes I will always go back to guitar as number one but it’s fun to learn new things! |

Any specific questions I should ask sellers on eBay if I go that route? |

I'll restate my recommendation that you'd do well to rent for a few months. Maybe take a lesson or two, and see if that doesn't inform your decision. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Even without the lessons, renting is a good inexpensive way to find out if you have the aptitude and enjoy playing the trumpet. Plus you will get a trumpet that is in playable condition, which is not guaranteed purchasing through eBay. |

I’m surprised it took as long as it did for someone to point this out.☝️☝️
Seriously, I was reading through the no doubt well intentioned horn suggestions and thinking “….wait a minute…..😳😳”
