What happened to all the old bugles from the early days of Drum and Bugle Corps? Can’t find any online. |

It depends on what you mean by “early days”.
There are still competition G bugles on Ebay (single piston, valve rotor, two piston, three piston). Sometimes they are misclassified as trumpets or other more commonly known brass instruments.
There’s a group on Facebook that specialize in G bugles for sale that might be of interest to you called ‘“G” Bugles For Sale-Wanted-Trade’.
Most of the instruments (and there are a lot) were sold off individually by the last corps to use them and currently reside in attics or basements or nailed to the wall of trendy restaurants. _________________ Scooter Pirtle

Two of the last three manufactures of G bugles either stopped making G bugles or went out of business entirely. The third will only make them in sets to special order.
I read somewhere that D&BC bugles in G became popular in places like South Korea and Japan, where they picked up the tradition. Their organizations bought many of the used bugles that were in good condition.
A while back, I inquired about buying a G three-valve soprano bugle in order to "convert" and use it as a low G/F trumpet. An experienced brass repairman advised that any used G bugle likely will need too much restoration to be worth the effort. The advice was mostly correct. Most of the older instruments I found for sale on places like Reverb or eBay clearly had issues like red rot, and likely have issues such as worn valves or broken parts which are no longer replaceable. _________________ Enjoy the journey. |

You can get Monette to make you a bugle if you want the ultimate in trumpet niche bragging rights.

If I'm on your wavelength on this..... No, I don't look like Jesus. I just recycled that avatar from another social media account. I should have thought more deeply and remembered why Judas Thoma, Didymus in Greek, was called the "The Twin". _________________ Enjoy the journey. |

The market for those domestically is all but gone since almost no groups are using them anymore, and there are no manufacturers making new ones in any kind of number. They are effectively worth next to nothing so most sit in closets of collectors collecting dust.
Although as pointed out before groups in Japan and the Philippines both use G bugles in competition, and are buying as many as they can in bulk. When my ensemble sold their set and purchased new Bb horns a few years ago, we shipped almost all of them (about 60 horns) to a single buyer in the Philippines.
The larger bugles are a somewhat popular in the Franken-horn world. I've put bugle bells on Bb horns for some cool playing horns, I've seen bari/euph bugles used in building Cimbassi, and some models were able to cut beautifully into fantastic Bb concert tubas.
But yeah, they're mostly gone. I still have my custom sop for fun though! _________________ Martin D Williams

Sam Ash Music has had bugles in G in the past. Check their musical internet site. _________________ Steve Hollahan
