A phone? I think texting is probably better than calling though. Email might work too if you have the trumpet player’s email address.

Solo.
Dictionary says "done by one person alone. Unaccompanied".

I think “unaccompanied trumpeter” is more accurate than “solo trumpeter” as the later could be a soloist performing with an ensemble. Where unaccompanied means no one else is performing.

Dictionary says "done by one person alone. Unaccompanied";
from Italian solo, literally "alone," from Latin solus "alone"

In common parlance one might call the featured instrumentalist taking a ride in a jazz ensemble a soloist or say they were playing a solo, but would not say they were unaccompanied.

Btw, I think the OP accidentally started a new thread further refining his original question.

However, if so, I am more confused what term he is looking for. But I am interested in the answer.

"Avant-garde" has nothing to do with the orchestration. It's a style. You can play avant-garde alone or in a 100-piece orchestra.

Avant-garde: "New and unusual or experimental ideas, especially in the arts, or the people introducing them."

You, yourself, can confirm the definitions of any terms by just by googling "Define: ______".

I think I, and others, took OP’s “by themselves” to mean playing without anyone else participating. But on second thought I suspect he meant “making up the part on the fly”. Themselves as opposed to the composer/written part.

I still wouldn’t have come up with “avant gard” based on his prompts.
