Anybody ever "blow out" their salivatory glands while playing? Had a rehearsal last Friday and had not played for a while and, the next day, the left side of my face was painfully swollen around the ear. Doctor suspected a "stone" in the salivatory gland, but it turned up negative. The pain and swelling has subsided, but I'm pretty sure playing started it. I realize I should probably lay low for a week or so and warm up properly next time, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and has any words of wisdom. thx

If you have a cold or just sniffles, or even allergies, the fluids that build up can be pushed into the interstitial space around the ear by the pressure of trumpet playing and cause what you describe. It could have gotten (really) infected which would require a more drastic response, but since you are OK, forget about it. Until the next time it happens...
