Sure is nice to see quality music in popular culture in some cultures still.
Nice chops and section playing by the trumpets too. |

Are those people on stage playing, or is that recorded music? _________________ Craig Mitchell |

Those trumpet players are not playing, that's for sure. Geez I HATE this kind of drivel. From tv commercials to YouTube background music, it's just abysmal.....

As a listener, I am mostly convinced that a real, but unidentified trumpeter is performing this live (or pre-recorded-for-live) music. However, perhaps a keyboardist is performing the trumpet part on a high-end synth. |

Yeah. Those "performers" probably had to be shown how to hold the instruments.
My son works in TV and film. He says almost everything we hear when we are watching performers is recorded. As he put it, the producers don't want to risk mistakes or audio glitches going into customers' homes.
Not everything, but almost. _________________ Craig Mitchell |

My take is all the "musicians" are actors. I'm also gonna say probably Waynard or maybe Harry Kim or the guy who's been on "Dancing with the Stars" for a few years on the solo trumpet.
I have "sidelined" in several TV shows, movies & commercials. "Sideline" is the term used when real musicians are hired to portray musicians in TV, movie & commercials. We always mimed to pre-recorded tracks. Real musicians are used so that accuracy in holding the horn, etc. - can be obtained.
Sideline also means AFM contract, which has fairly decent day rate plus overtime, pension, health & such. It also means that after a minimum of two years, we start getting reuse pay. Reuse pay can amount to MUCH MORE than what we were paid for the day.
My brass quintet was featured in an episode of "The West Wing" - season 2, "Noel." We rehearsed the scene on set and then the actors were dismissed. We then recorded "Joy to the World" to which we later mimed to when the scene was actually shot. It was done like that so that the actor dialogue could be heard more easily.
And yep - that's me who you hear clam a note. We played the tune maybe 5 or 6 times absolutely note perfect. After every take the director asked for another. Then I clammed. He said "That's the one!" I says but I scratched a note & he says that's what they wanted.
Would not tell us why, only that we needed to watch the episode to find out.
That clammed note is what the plot of the entire episode was based.
On that one, were were paid day Sideline rate PLUS recording, and we got a 2nd day of sideline out of it so....a pretty nice payday that keeps paying every year. _________________ Tim Wendt

Some years ago I recorded some tracks for the American Music Awards. One was a medley of nominated tunes and a couple of filler tunes.
For about 45 minutes in the studio, I was paid $400 for the session and went home.
The next day I was asked by the contractor to see if I wanted to do the show live playing along with the tracks I recorded. When I asked how much they were paying, I was told there was no pay in it. It would be good exposure for me. Without skipping a beat I said "let me call my landlord to see if he will accept exposure for this month's rent" !!
Two months later I saw a teenage girl dancing around mimicking my tracks live on the show. |
