Been learning the Bb trumpet for two years. Rc'd recently an Eb trumpet. Looking for a fingering chart for the Eb or an explanation on which fingers to use & why.

Same as Bb but your C is now a concert Eb instead of a concert Bb. Some people rely heavily on alternate fingerings, but most people use them on a case by case basis.

If you look through the charts on the Arban, Charlier, etc. books, they sometimes include transpositions after showing all of the basic 3-valved fingerings beginning on each transposed "C." ie - showing the open fingering "C" for a Bb trumpet sounds down a step compared with concert pitch, A trumpet down a minor third, Eb up a minor third, and so-on.

The biggest challenge you may face when branching out into this type of playing for the first time is disassociating what your ears are used to hearing that has been mapped onto your muscle memory of the fingerings. Which is to say when "Low C" on your Eb now sounds and feels to you like bottom-space "F" on your Bb, the next open note second-line "G" for the Eb trumpet will sound and feel like the open note third space "C" on your Bb, but the notes around these will take time to play well-centered and well in-tune. The fingering part is the one thing we brass players have it easy with - getting these things to sing is the work we do!

Happy practicing, and PS - what kind of horn, etc.? Tell us about your journey as it unfolds!

If the music is written for an Eb trumpet, the fingerings are the same as you use on your Bb. It’s your perception of where you are on the staff that takes some getting used to, since you can’t depend on your ear. The other problem is learning to play with a big, open tone, and not sounding pinched.
