Hey Dave!
I used to do this with Charlier etudes when I was studying with Claude. On free Sundays, I'd play 6, then 12 the next week and finally did the whole book.
Of course there's no one to verify this because I was the only one in the audience.

Yes, I think that is the best thing you can do before a big solo or something. It sikes you up so you don't get stage fright. It also lets you know what it feels like without stopping during a song. You should do it often
