Hi Guys

Doesn't a Bach C trumpet from the seventies (early elkhart, serial < 100000) have a 3rd slide stop? On pictures, this does not seem the case, at least not like on Bach Bb trumpets.

Thank you very much

Not sure how common this is/was. I have Bach ML C trumpet, built around 1980 without a 3rd valve stop rod.

I acquired this 1976 CL229/25A a number of years ago. It has the interesting? addition of a Bb style 3rd Valve slide stop plus an Amado water key. I really liked the way the horn responded from the very beginning. The water key? No real need. Slide top? Never seen another one on a Bach C. Works well.

Best wishes,
Mike

Many years ago I was retro-fitting 3rd slide stops on Bach C's for my friends. At an ITG I was talking with Ted Wagner, the head of the company asking him why Bach didn't fit a slide stop on their C trumpets (Ted was holding a new Bach C and as we talked the third slide fell to the ground denting the crook). All I could say was "I rest my case".

I owned a Bach 239-25R from the late 90s with a Yamaha style screw stop.

My Bach C from 1982 has no stop.

In the 70's, no slide stops.
Bach didn't start putting them on until mid 90's or so.
(Believe me, I've owned plenty of these...🙄)

My best guess on when I bought my 256 is mid 90s. It too has the Yamaha style stop.

Thank you guys.
I bought the trumpet serial 98xxx). Plays very well.
Perhaps i should consider retro-fitting some kind of slide stop?

It's an easy job - Bach parts fit and the screw is cut to length for the stop installed on the top outer slide. Get slide washers and shrink tubing for the end of the stop screw and it becomes silent.

All you need is an elastic hair tie, one without any metal on it is preferred. Cheap, simple, and easier than loosening a screw to remove the 3rd slide.

A hair tie without a vulcanized rubber center is also preferred if the horn is silver. The sulphur in the rubber will react badly with the silver.

Also, I have never found loosening a screw or two stop nuts to be anything other than easy.

Losing those two stop nuts is also easy so I put a drop of blue locktite on the outer one.

Agreed. One my Bach C trumpet, I just use a short piece of white twine, that I tie into a short bow. Works fine for me.

My 70's Bach 229 doesn't have anything stopping the third slide. I've also thought about retrofitting one but I don't think it would be worth the cost and risk of affecting the playability of the horn.

I'd like to draw attention to the added benefit of installing a pin style 3rd slide stop besides keeping your slide from dropping on the floor.

It's been our experience that adding mass to the third slide provides greater pitch center or "slotting", and by adding of a weighted stop screw provides even greater stability. We also offer heavy 3rd stop screws for Yamaha and Schilke.

I hope this is helpful.
