What other brands/models would be closely comparable to the Yamaha 8310Zii?

Thank you,

CA

If you’re looking for good all around horns, there’s always the faithful Bach Strads and Yamaha Xenos, but I’d recommend trying the new 8335LAII. Extremely versatile horn.

Nothing

The design lineage of the Zs is unique.

Yamaha Miyashiro is similar but has a brace and the bell is different. There are probably other differences but it's probably the closest I've played.

Depending on what you mean by "closely comparable", any of the answers you've received so far might be correct.

If I ignore the "closely" part of your question and make the assumption that "comparable" means "usable in the kind of musical setting for which one might choose an 8310Z Gen 2", then I've heard that the Stomvi VRII ("V Raptor") and the Jupiter XO 1600I (Roger Ingram model) might qualify.

DISCLAIMER: I have not played either of the horns I mentioned above, although I do own a 6310Z and an 8310Z (first generation).

When Bobby designed the 6310Z he started with Yamaha's prototype of a Martin Committee-type horn. So while I don't believe you'll find anything really close to the 6310/8310, you might try horns intended to be "improved" Martin Committees. The Lawler C7 comes to mind, but Adams, BAC, Kanstul and others have made horns based on the Committee....

To my knowledge, the Bobby Shew horn was a large bore bell and leadpipe t-slide ass'y on a small bore bore valve block.

Hard to duplicate. Why not just buy a Yamaha model? Gotta be cheaper used
or new than Frankenhorn.

Bobby was playing a 3 digit med bore Yamaha designed by Schilke. A B6 or B7 would be the model. With the 4 digit series they went to the 6310B and the Shew models followed. Of course, Schilke was the "Committee" that designed the Committee.

I've had both a Shew and a Schilke B-7 and I would not consider them somewhat interchangeable. To me, the Schilke has a slightly more brilliant sheen and the Shew more midrange. They both were easy to play as well as being lighter, physically, than a standard horn.

According to “kevin” at yamaha in the early 80’s. The original shew was a Yamaha 636b.
That was a lager bell on a 445 bore body with the leadpipe and tuning slide from the 736/73737/738/739 series. (7 meant it was silver plated)
Those same horns in lacquer would have started with 6 although I have never seen a 638 or 639.

The on,y difference between the 636 and the 636b was that the shew (636b) had a lighter gauge bell. I had the 636 back then and it was a real nice horn. I have a 636 bell here and every once in a while I put it on a horn. Always plays good, but the sound is kind of “dry”.

I’ve never seen the lighter gauge “b” version of the yamaha large bell. My guess is that the b version was actually a Schilke bell.

I recently picked up a Stomvi VR-II with copper bell via trade in the shop and it reminds me a ton of the new Shew although I prefer the feel and playability of the VRII over the ZII. The new Shew trumpet is a wonderful instrument though! The VRII is going to be my new commercial/lead/show horn. It's a ton of fun.

Best,T

May I ask why you posed this question? I am just curious.

I assume you like the 8310Zii. Perhaps there is something that you just don’t like about it. Or perhaps the cost is not in your budget.

Knowing the answer might lead to more helpful answers.

Thank you for the responses. I'm going to a store to play the Shew horn tomorrow and wanted to get an idea of other horns that were along the same vein. I'm hoping they have the XO Ingram model as well. We will see.

I have found myself playing lead in band that looks like it could be permanent and need/want something different than what I have. It is fun shopping for a new horn.

In that case, you might also want to take a look at the Bach LT190L1B (the "Commercial" series) if one is available to try.

Many years ago I saw Bobby Shew at the Lighthouse in LA. He played his flugel all night. Didn't use a trumpet at all.
