You can only choose one - good luck on that!
My choices are:
Trumpet - Red Allen
Cornet - Wild Bill Davison
So many players to choose from, but these two stand out to me due to their sound and improvisation. _________________ MER |

Warren Vache is a beast on the horn. The man can play anything. He's so underrated.
I never really got to hear Bobby Hackett, Wild Bill and some of the others too much. What I heard of Bobby Hackett was really impressive.
Woody Shaw also played cornet on some of his late 70's recordings. |

i'm not quite sure what you mean by traditional, and a favorite is all but impossible to pick. what i can try and delimit are the two players on their respective instruments who I've studied and learned a lot from:
cornet: rex stewart
trumpet: woody shaw
caveat:
i have only learned from stewart from recordings. shaw i learned from recordings, live performaces and time spent with him. _________________ Now:

the above is true. regarding vache, he dosen't do it in public, but he is an accomplished modernist.
regarding shaw, he not only performed on cornet, but also recorded on it as well. i had the honor of being present when he played trpt, crt, flug. never all three, but flug with trpt or crt. _________________ Now:

Met Connie when he was forced to flee to Dallas, where his daughter lives, when Katrina hit New Orleans. I was lucky enough to sit in on a gig with him and talk to him. One of the nicest guys you'll meet and a straight shooter.
My personal favorite "traditional" player is the guy in my avatar, Tommy Loy. Probably more famous for his playing of the National Anthem but he was an excellent traditional player in his own right. I grew up listening to him and and he, more than anybody, was responsible for my playing trumpet. _________________ Jim New S5 M and MS with C Backbore
