It's got to be a tough gig playing the same thing night after night. I know it does pay fairly well.
Years ago, I got to know one of the percussionists from Phantom. We met in Hawaii. My wife grew up in Honolulu and so did this woman. We usually go back every year. We met through some mutual friends. She was back visiting her mom and we frequented the same beach. We ran into each other every summer for a few years. She did the entire run of the show. She told me they were required to find their own sub when they wanted to take time off.
Since Phantom closed a week or so back, I guess she's unemployed now! |

Edit: Sorry, you have to go about 14 mins in to get to the section on playing in the pit for 35 years.

Yes it is tough playing the same thing 8 times a week;
However it is a very good job as jobs go, and you get good medical
and your building into the pension fund which is a good thing
as you get older.
Broadway has become one of the only ways to have a "Career"
as a musician
in NY, unless you get the Phil or Met or Ballet gig..best of luck
with that! The free lance things have dried up for the most part
which is a drag as NY is considered one of the entertainment capitols
of the world..I did a good amount of broadway shows in the past
and glad I did..But the promising young students I have that want to go for
it? I make sure they realize that a teaching degree at this stage
is a very good thing to go for..Thats if your interested in food and shelter! |

I studied with Bob Zottola years ago and I know he did maybe 16-17 years on Broadway. Jan, the woman who did Phantom didn't seem to do any playing outside of the show from what I recall. I haven't seen her in years and doubt she would even remember me. I gather she made pretty good money. |
