Been a jazz guy for 40 years and if I could pick one player whose style and skills I’d love to have it would be Clifford Brown. However, over the past two to three years I have been listening to Miles a lot and just recently re-discovered Freddie Hubbard.

So: who are the young players taking Hubbard into todays music? Any recommendations? Mostly looking for people that are up and coming and not big names (yet).

Thanks. I know those and have seen a few of them live. The most memorable experience was with Roy Hargrove who one night walked into Ortliebs in Philly and the person by the door collecting the tickets didn’t recognize him and asked him to pay 10 bucks Must’ve been in 2002 or 2003.

Freddie Hubbard's son Duane has a cool site to preserve the legacy of his dad.
Duane is also on FaceBook and lives in Florida.

Is John Swanna still too old?

I feel that Nicholas Payton has many elements to his playing that could be considered an extension of Freddie's artistry.

No one is too old, I was just wondering if there are younger players that I haven’t heard of that keep going off from Hubbard. John Swana is good too.

Nicholas Payton is someone I need to check out more, haven’t heard a lot of his playing yet.

Nicholas Payton as a ton of stuff out there.

Check out:

"Fingerpainting: The Music Of Herbie Hancock" - Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Mark Whitfield

Nicholas Payton Albums:

"Gumbo Nouveau"

"Dear Louis"

"Into the Blue"

There's much more of course, but this would be a great place to start.

Have you heard Josh Kauffman? This dude is badass, but I wouldn’t pigeonhole him into any specific jazz lineage. Josh seems to have the entire history of jazz in his heart and under his fingers.
