I'm thinking back to live performances of the Brandenburg concerto #2 that I've heard from the audience, performed by principal trumpets.
Specifically, I recall: (1) Ed Carroll on tour with a group in LA in the late 70's that was truly amazing, (2) Gerard Schwarz in Symphony Hall, Boston also the 70's - amazing and repeated the last movement as an encore, (3) Tom Stevens with the LA Phil, beautifully played, and (4) Steve Hendrickson, NSO, beautiful lyrical style.
I'm wonder about the current generation of principal trumpet players and live performances. How common is it for them to perform it? What have you heard? |

I heard Ryan Anthony play it with the Dallas Symphony in either 2018 or 2019. Stuart Stephenson performed it this last summer at the Aspen Music Festival. I believe Ben Hauser did it with the York Symphony not long ago. Paul Merkelo performed it a number of times a couple of years back.
I’d say it’s not too uncommon for it to come up. |

I heard Jeff Curnow play it with Dallas around 2002 and Richard Gianguilio played it with one of the suburban orchestras around Dallas about the same time. Since moving to Oklahoma I’ve heard Karl Sievers play it a few times both with the OKC Philharmonic and some chamber orchestras around the metroplex.
It’s not too uncommon.
