Hey TH, I had a chance to chat with Andre Bonna (the son of Marcus Bonna) for an hour last week, and then I tested out their trumpet mute line-up. Some really terrific mutes to consider.
Have any of you tried any of these out? If so ... what did you think?
I don't have the large straight mute, but I have the other three. I really like the cup mute. When the corks are properly trimmed there is very little space between the rim of the cup and the rim of the bell. You get really good coverage and thus a sound that is a nice contrast to, say, a H&B Stone Lined cup mute.
I think of the Soft straight mute as a hybrid of the regular straight mute and a Sotto Voce mute. Not really for section playing, but a nice option for solo playing.
The regular straight mute sounds fairly similar to a Denis Wick -- slightly less "nasal" -- so works just fine for section or solo playing.

I have an old MB straight/cup combination that has a shiny finish. The straight mute has a nice sound; however, the insert that the cup portion screwed into stripped out very quickly even though I was very careful with it. I do use the straight fairly often on quintet gigs.

Nice! Yes, I agree with all that. Yeah, the soft mute definitely could be put to great use, just needs to be the right piece. Def a solo mute ... not something I'd use in an ensemble unless it was something that was very atmospheric. _________________ On the road with Under the Streetlamp

Wow, very cool. I wasn't aware they had made a combo mute, I'll have to ask them about that. _________________ On the road with Under the Streetlamp
