Feels so good

Hi all
I love feels so good by Chuck Mangione. Everytime I hear it I feel so good. Does anyone else have a similar feeling.

Okay, so I'm gonna go against the grain here, but...

a) Chuck Mangione is technically a very good player, and an amazing composer-arranger.

b) He himself will tell you he doesn't improvise, but transcribes his solos and plays them note-for-note (quite well, IMHO)

c) He introduced the non-musical radio-listening public to the flugelhorn

d) He introduced a whole new audience to jazz with his pop tunes, and (years before the fact) opened the doors for guys like post-Sting Chris Botti, and post-TOP Greg Adams

e) He runs with a pretty good crowd, guys like Marv Stamm and Lew Soloff

f) At least he's not Kenny G! (although he is an amazing player in his own right)

Not an improviser? how many not improvisers have you heard playing with Art Blakey and the jazz messengers, and kickin ass with them at that?
I personally dont like "Feels So Good" but im not sure you exactly know what you're talking about.

I read the text of an interview somebody did recently with Mangione, and he said that "Feels so Good" put both his kids through college.

Sounds like he did ok to me..................

I had no idea that Chuck played with Art Blakey. Wow, that's worth a Ph.D. in music from any school. I stand corrected, as I could have sworn that Chuck pre-wrote solos, but this gives me a whole new level of respect for a guy I've always respected anyway!

I'm not a fan anymore, but he is due a few props. He was a member of the Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (along with Keith Jarrett) when he still played trumpet. And contrary to what you may think, he was definitely improvising at that point, and doing it pretty well.

One of his best albums is "Tarentella" - not in print now, but an all-star lineup including Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Gadd, etc. in a live setting. Definitely worth looking for. At one point in "Manteca" Mangione rips off a (pretty easy) Dizzy lick while trading fours with Diz, and you can hear the crowd crack up as Diz feigns indignation. Worth looking for.

Also his early Riverside albums with his brother Gap and Sal Nistico. *If* you're looking for jazz, and not the commercial stuff he was peddling for CBS in the 80s.

What a coincidence---I live in an apt. with roommates and last week after I'd been practicing for a bit I went into the kitchen for some food (that's where we keep it) and a roommate (who is a musician)(well, a guitarist songwriter...) asks me if I was playing that song by that Chuck (something) guy who was on King Of The Hill...?
I had NOT been playing that song.
Maybe I played the first few notes by chance and he supplied the "I can name that song in 3 notes"...I dunno...but I said "you mean this song"? and proceeded to sing it to him. It had been a long time! "Feels So Good" must be in the air...

I played the Chuck Mangione show for marching band last year and man I had the best time everytime that I would play that music.. It never gets too old.. I absoulutly loved playing the show, and it showed threw my playing because everyshow I would play it with so much fire and emotion.. One of the judges once said "there's only when person in the entire band that understands chuck mangione, and it's your lead trumpet"... chuck is the bomb... we even have his autographed picture in the band room. heheh.

I love it when the radio station says, "And right after the break we'll hear from Chuck.... " All that good stuff and they play THAT! The shortened version without the pretty horn solo intro.

A couple Saturdays ago I went and heard Carl Saunders, Don Menza and Bill Reichenbach. I was mentioning to Carl that I had not heard of Don Menza since my College days back in the seventies.

Carl said, "I actually have it written in my contract that I will never be required to play "Groovin' Hard" or "Feelings" again.

I can't imagine him playing "Feels so Good" either.

I used to go see Chuck at the Universal Theatre once a year for about five years.

As a young musician getting ready to start college, I found a white album at a discount store in 1971; It was a cat sitting on a folding chair playing a flugelhorn (I knew what a flugelhorn was but not exactly what it sounded like).

The feeling from Chuck's "Land of Make Believe" (before vocals were added...) really hooked me into how pretty jazz could be in a modern setting. I spent the next five years studying jazz in college, playing everything from Basie to Weather Report but "Land of Make Believe" was always a touchstone for me.

I was fortunetely enough to be the featured soloist with San Francisco State's big band when director Bennet Freidmand pulled out "Land..". We tore the chart up, with our best performance (fortunately) being recorded for local PBS tv.

I haven't been that big of a fan of his newer stuff. Those early 1970's recordings really showed Chuck's jazz chops.

Wanna talk about a coincidence... I decided to revisit my old cassette tapes and listen to some old stuff with a fresh perspective. I hadn't touched any of these for probably 10 years. I pulled out Feels So Good and threw it in the car to listen to on the way to work. This cassette was probably one of the first albums I ever had (along with Billy Joel's Glass Houses - can you guess my age?) I started playing trumpet in about 1981 or so, and this was very influential to me. Minor tragedy - when I put the 20 year old cassette in the tape deck, it got eaten on the second time through. Time to buy the CD!

I'm still dying to get a flugel. I found my best solos back in the high school jazz days were the flugel tunes. It was easy to hear Chuck in my head.

I got my flugel because of Chuck back in the late 70's. I got to solo "Hill where the Lord Hides". Remember that one?
What about "Childern of Sanchez"? Love the bass trombones.

Check out a video called "SASS and BRASS".....sarah Vaughn, Dizzy, Don Cherry, Chuck Mangione, and ...maybe Maynard..haven't seen it in like 12 years...but Chuck's definately on it, and his improv with those guys was freakin' great.....a whole new level of respect came outta that show.. Bob List

Yeah... Me and a guy here at school, we like to go to the music shop and play the first couple notes of feel so good to annoy the guys in the shop... its funny cause we'll come back for somethin legit later on and they'll be humming or whistling it.... suprising how that song gets in your head haha
