Hi Trumpet Herald
I am new to baroque trumpet. I can play the thing fairly well, that's not my issue. What I am just discovering is that my knowledge of baroque performance practice is very limited. I have many many gaps. As I should, considering I never studied TRUE baroque performance, just the basic stuff to play baroque tunes on picc. i.e. play lightly, strong beats weak beats etc.
In listening to recordings of pieces by fantini and attempting to learn them, i've stumbled across things that I am clueless to. For instance, in some recordings of the Fantini 8 sonatas for trumpet, I hear a pulsating sound in a spot I would think a tril would be appropriate... what and why?? I also have questions on baroque music notations like staves, keys etc.
Where can I learn this information? What resources are out there? I do plan on picking up a copy of Fantini's book, but I am worried I will not fully understand it. Any advice is good advice.
Thanks! _________________ Bach 25 Bb - GR G66CX

A good place to start would be by picking up the three volume "The Art of Baroque Trumpet Playing" by Ed Tarr, available at the Baroque Trumpet Shop.
The sound you refer to is likely a trillo, or measured tremolo, and was a common ornamentation at that time (you hear it a lot vocally in early opera works, Monteverdi, etc.)
Also, taking some lessons with a working baroque trumpet player would be very helpful as well.
My biggest advice is to treat the baroque trumpet as a tool to make the music come alive, and not to think of it as "another horn I can play." It sounds like you are already doing that, which is a good thing! Keep going, and have fun! _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------------

It is a bit academic and not the most exciting reading, but the information is there. After you read, you can go back for applications to specific pieces. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S
