In your experience, which Olds model/s works best for big-band lead? _________________ 2006 Buick Lucerne |

Olds Supers are excellent for that job. IMO, the most versatile horn in their line. My old pal Mike, an excellent lead player here in LA, swears by the bit of resistance he gets, the core and no lack for brightness to carry over the band.

I would say Olds Studio, or SuperStar for lead. _________________ Ron Berndt

It is worth noting it took me a moment to acclimate to the Olds resistance. It feels nice and open now, but I was trying to overblow it at first and it FOUGHT me. Once I found my feet it was super versatile. _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!

Local pro loves Ambassadors for brighter, more lead orinted things - thanks for the reminder!! He has a few!!
I did maybe a hundred show band gigs on mine before giving it to a school. Great horn. We played rough bars, so I played a cheap horn (cost me £60 IIRC). Should have kept it! _________________ Maestro Arturo Sandoval on Barkley Microphones!

I just recently popped off and bought a surprisingly good condition 1947 Olds Super silver-plated and had recently gotten a late 60's Super last winter. I had several Super trumpets and cornets over the years and had the impression the earlier Supers were lighter and more responsive. After a quick clean and lube, I got the postage scale out and confirmed the older one is a quarter pound lighter, which makes it noticeably easy to "light up", but not nearly as much as the fixer up LA Mendez I am also checking out. I am not really a lead player as such, but I find those horns, as well as the older brass bell Olds Specials to be bright and responsive.
They there are the early 50's Conn 10B Victors......... sorry, off topic... _________________ huntman10

So, who's for the Custom, Recording, Recording Model Super, Standard, or French model? I think that covers all the catalogued models, except I think they designated one a Military modality! Just any old Olds in a pinch! _________________ huntman10

For all you Ambassador fans: I just noticed Meridian Winds (user name sax-some set of numbers) has an Autrey-tweaked Ambassador listed on EBay. _________________ Ron Berndt

IMO, the best Olds for big band lead style playing would be a Super. I've done plenty of lead style gigs on a Super Recording and it works great as well. I just think the Super is a little brighter and more focused which suits my approach to lead playing. _________________ Pat Shaner

They're all good. Olds horns all seem to have a centered focused sound with plenty of overtones, like a good Bach or Calicchio. The Olds bell taper is pretty unique compared to other makes.

I have an Old Opera, and while it is a great horn, it seems to lean toward a more "legit" sound. I suppose, with the right mouthpiece, it might work as a lead horn. I do love the Nickel bell. _________________ Best Regards,
