Listen to what he says at app. 2:00 . . . "Third, during the vibration cycle . . . ."
And before anybody says, "Well that's just for trombone players." Actually, all brass embouchures function the exact same way.
Somewhere, Lloyd Leno did the same thing with trumpet players but I don't know where to find those videos, but I remember watching them maybe 20 years ago. Maybe Walla Walla College has them archived? _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz
There are others out there. The bottom line is that the lips do cycle between open and closed while playing. You could try to argue that the *sensation* of having "open" or "closed" lips might be beneficial, but the reality is that the aperture opens and closes. Personally, I believe it's better to understand what actually is happening first. _________________ wilktone.com
#1. These videos are disturbing and I regret watching them on my school owned laptop. I hope they don't trigger some warning in the tech department!
2. These videos confirm what I tell my students. The lips need to lightly touch inside the mouthpiece - and not be pinned open by the inner rim - prior to playing. _________________ --Matt--

As if any more confirmation is needed, the frequency of tones emitted fit the physics of a pipe closed at the mouthpiece, not that of a tube open at both ends. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley
