I'm on the road a lot these days (or the plane), so I can't carry around with me physical materials to play. I would like to learn jazz, I got my degree in trumpet perf. but I was strictly classical. Are there any good digital materials for learning jazz (besides recordings, of course) that I can use with my ipad? Thanks _________________ Please join me as well at:

The Aebersold Jazz Handbook and the books for all of the Play-Along volumes are available on PDF, and usable from an iPad.

Go to qpress.ca and browse. Tons of jazz etudes and solo transcriptions you can buy and download. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! The link for the qPress Jazz Catalog is here. You can filter it further by author or publisher using the sidebar filters (or hitting the white button on the bottom right if you are on mobile). _________________ Check out qPress for the largest selection of trumpet books on the internet. |

Another vote for qPress. If you want to go digital, that's one of the best one-stop sources for jazz trumpet players there is.
Caveat: I, personally, find the Search function there -protestations notwithstanding- very exasperating. Evidently, you need to go to a Category (i.e. away from the home page) and it's there, although, for me, it's too light (why is that? Attempt at hipness?), but you can find it there if you look.
Related note, if you're just starting out learning Jazz and don't have a lot of materials/equipment available to you, checkout transcribed solos by Chet Baker and the Prestige-era Miles. If you've got a laptop with you, you can hear all the music on these solos by going to YouTube.
And don't just play the written notes. Play a whole transcription but develop you ear and rhythmic feel also. Take a lick from a solo, listen to it, especially listening to the rhythmic and articulation content. Once it's in your ear and you can sing it along with the record, play it. And once you can play it, do it in other transpositions, the point being to develop your ear-finger coordination.
To reiterate, though, give qPress a shot. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Doesn't / didn't a THer once upon a time have a huge PDF file of jazz standards they transcribed? Like 600 or 700 songs? Or am I misremembering things? _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

Archive.org has lots of fakebooks for download:

I discovered these through the (android) app "Fakebook Pro" which automates downloading them. Check out their download site:

You might find this helpful. But regarding printed music, just keep in mind that you can interpret/play the right notes but with the wrong feeling. Don't get buried in that. Use your ears and absorb the original
