I had some problems contacting Jim Becker recently, so inquired about his status. It seems that he has just left Osmun, so anyone wanting Osmun/Becker repair work is out of luck.

No info on where he went. so either continue using Osmun/Becker-trained employee, use another tech, or wait for further developments about Jim.

If I hear anything I will gladly share the info, but I am not the POC for related info.

Hope this helps.

Whatever news he has, it's probably best to let Jim make the announcement rather than posting on his behalf.

Indeed. It’s his news to share.

I agree 100% and encourage people to let him explain if he wants to.

The fly in the ointment is that he got fed up and left TH not too long ago.

It's ok everybody - I sent a message to Jim earlier today and he said he wasn't able to login to TH to be able to post anything. He is healthy and all is right with the world.

He has asked if I could mention that he has accepted a new position elsewhere and will be moving on from Osmun. No need to speculate - all will become clear in due time. A fantastic repairman and great guy. Wishing Jim all the best on his journey!

Yamaha. That's what I suspected.

Does this mean that,
*he will no longer be taking private work?
*is this an R&D position?

Thanks

Good for Jim!
He did excellent valve refitting work for me and I wish him the best in his new position. I would imagine working w/Mr. Tanabe will be a lot of fun. Two of the best at what they do.

Is it still worth it to send my horn to Osmun? I need some dents taken out and I've sent horns to Mr. Becker in the past. I know he wasn't the only tech there, but it was his reputation that made me choose them.

My perception of Osmun (never been there or done business) but have known of the business for 30 years is that it is a reputable shop.
If your goal is to have something such as Becker's 'blueprinting' or 'precision valve alignment', then perhaps that depends on the individual doing the work.
I don't have any info about whether any of the other techs at Osmun are trained to do that type of work.

I wonder if he can get yamaha to deal with the insane valve noise that my (and other’s) generation 2 yamaha 8310z makes. It’s a crazy amount of noise. And it’s not the guides and it’s not going away. It’s the springs. They just twang away randomly and loud.

An atelier is a workshop for an artist or a designer. In this case, it's working on designing instruments.

[edit: Further discussion pointed out it doesn't primarily focus on designing of instruments.]

Don’t they also supply services too?

I'm pretty sure we have had TH members discussing their experiences with Wayne Tanabe at the Yamaha NY Atelier working on their horns.
