|
|
Two things I'd like to improve while practicing as pp as I can.
When I "breath" start (not tonguing in the note) I can get the note but then it quickly turns into air before the note returns.
And conversely, when I articulate starting the note I think I am playing softly but can always reduce my loudness after having the note.
Is this indicative of me need to and building up my embouchure? |

Embouchure skill and fine control is what you need to develop. Doing excessive "strength" work could make the problem worse. You must spend much more time with practice in the low and soft range. Contact me and I can give you some ideas on how to do that.
Regarding air "support", I assume you are referring to the exhalation effort you are using for particular notes. Air pressure controls the dynamics. Soft notes require less air pressure than loud notes. Efficient playing requires less air pressure and flow. |

Part of the 'skill' is to maintain the embouchure / lip / breath setting ('follow-through') after initially sounding the note. Have the goal of 'playing the entire note', not just 'hitting it'. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

The air pressure and duration depends on loud or soft, short or long, dynamics, etc.
The embouchure's tone production skill is required for any and all of those. |

Try playing Long Tones at a comfortable MF, then gradually decrescendo, keeping the air continuously flowing with a continuous sound.. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Thanks all! Will implement and ask for help or questions as I go. Another odd thing I have found while playing softly. After my long tones at pp I find that I exhale when pulling out the trumpet. What am I doing wrong here?! |

What I experience is the relaxation of my chest and lungs, due to stopping the air support needed while playing. That relaxation and re-alignment of lungs and torso might 'move some air' and feel sort of like a slight exhale.
A factor might be the technique you use on inhale - torso expansion, chest expansion, shoulders, etc. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
