Just got what appears to be a 1905 CG Conn Connqueror.
Been cleaning for a few hours

Just needs a spit valve solder repair and I think it is going to be a player.
It has a slightly bent lead pipe but I probably don’t care.

So….
This has an extra slide with a lock on it to drop the horn down a half step to “A”. The 3rd valve slide is also very long.
Do I move that out as well?

Other Bb/A horns I have seen came with two slides but it seems like this version doesn’t need that.

Experience?

Nice cornet! Just play it while watching a tuner and adjust the valve slides for the best result.

Yep. It seems like it will be easy.
Funny as I often play in “guitar keys” where a half step down could be very handy if the temperament wasn’t off

Horn and case are both in remarkable condition! Nice find.

I used to have a 1920s Conn 22B trumpet with a rotary valve in the tuning slide to switch it to A. It required very little pull on the other slides to complete the key change, and it played extremely well in tune in A.

This is for the 1904 but it looks the same.

Nice find!

You can actually tune it to B, Bb and A! The "extra" slide on the cornet's left side has a middle section that can be removed, tuning it to B. Wit The extra section on, it will play in Bb, and if you pull that slide out to where there is a groove in the actual slide bend, it will play in A.

Slides 1, 2 and three also have grooves in them, and pushed all the way in it plays in B, pulled to the first grove, in Bb, and second groove in A.

Very clever!

I have one, and I played Stravinskijs "A Soldiers Tale" on it at my work many years ago. It had a fantastic sound, and all the "A"-parts were a breeze!

Interesting.
Mine doesn’t have the extra pieces or marks on the slides.
It’s stable in Bb with the slides in.

The 3rd valve slide does go out a complete 1/2 step..

I’m getting the spit valve fixed this week.
Valves are definitely leaking but I think it will be a fine mellow jazz horn after it gets fixed. Just have to see how much leakage can be easily tightened up.
