I mean, the Yamaha pieces are *fine* sure.

But I'll continue to play what I feel best on, and right now that's Monette Unity!

The Yammies’s are probably for a lot of people too ‘common’ though there are famous players who play the Yamaha mouthpieces (James Morrison, Hans Gansch). And for the legit orchestral players there are big sizes, 16, 17, 18.
But I can understand that orchestral top players have special wishes which may need custom made mouthpieces.
For the people who think Yamaha is too common (also valid for Bach) I hope that they find comfort in the expensive brands, possibly a 400+ dollar mouthpiece gives more confidence than a cheap Yammie. And even if it is just a psychological thing, who cares?

The hunt for the "perfect" mouthpiece sometimes is never ending. But most times, a "Cadillac" gets you where you want to go, no better than a "Chevy."

Interesting post! I once years ago had bags of mouthpieces…
My favorite is Bob Reeves… I don’t see anyone mentioning Reeves…
Is the opinion of most of the players on this post is that the newer makers are better quality etc…?

This thread is music to my ears.

I just bought a '67 Olds Ambassador on an impulse and need mouthpieces for it...didn't wanna go on a long mouthpiece safari...just wanted to get a yamaha mouthpiece or two that's similar to a Bach 3C....maybe a little darker

Soooo it's nice to hear that the 14C4 & 14D4 are the mouthpieces blessed by the trumpet gods...since that's exactly what I wanted

Sorry to disappoint you but Yamaha does not produce a 14C or 14D for cornet.
In fact it seems that they mainly produce the bigger sized cornet mouthpieces for piccolo trumpets.
For a cheap 3C long shank cornet mouthpiece I can advise you the A&s or for some more bucks the Josef Klier 3C.
Yamaha produces a real deep cornet mouthpiece, the 14E but that is short shank (no problem on an Ambassador) but is dark, close to the British Brassband sound. Excellent mouthpiece BTW.

I'm talking about trumpet this time...

Couldn't resist a cheap trumpet

Not sure about the new Reeves MP's but I use the vintage Purviance mouthpieces (which Reeves now offers although with slight differences)and love them. Have about 20 MP's and always go back to Purviance.

Why is it relevant to mention Reeves in a thread about Yamaha?

Same here. I have been using Reeves and Purviancs for decades. John Mohan, a professional who drops in here from time, uses Reeves, also.

Great, keep using them. And fine that you could find backup by a real professional. Hopefully it will give you some certainty.

After a year of trying something like forty mouthpieces, I returned to my Bach 3c (last generation). Money thrown away, Now I will have to resell them.

To Delano's point, though, stock mouthpieces can be quite good.

I just got a Schilke 9 and it's the most comfortable mouthpiece I've played, and I've got a bunch of "designer mouthpieces". I can't say if it will eventually be my go-to mouthpiece because of qualities beyond comfort. But I think the best legit sound I ever had was on a Schilke 11 and I played that for a long time, so . . .

I've also recently picked up a Bach 6, not as comfortable (but certainly not uncomfortable).as the Schilke.

I guess the discerning reader can read "mouthpiece safari" between my lines because I also just got a Donat.

But my point is that I could easily live with the Stock Bach or Schilke if I had to and these mouthpieces shouldn't be dismissed because they're relatively inexpensive and commonly available.

I ask Delano what he thinks of the Yamaha Bobby Shew Jazz (no lead), in general and also compared to other similar mouthpieces.

Sorry, you asked this earlier, I didn’t notice.
But I’m sorry, though I played a lot of Yamaha mouthpieces I never played the Bobby Shew pieces.

I have that mouthpiece and I like it a lot. Nice dark tone and a very comfortable rim. It's not my current main MP, but I'm not selling it, either.

I've only played on Warburton 4 rims since about 1990, and while I'm not averse to trying other pieces, I'd prefer the rim matches my pre-fire Warburtons. I had one of them threaded onto a Stomvi Flex mouthpiece that I use with one of my trumpets, but I use stock Warburtons on all of my other horns and I'm very happy with how they feel and play. Selling all of my cast-off mouthpieces (assorted Bach, Giardinelli, Schilke, and custom Marcinkiewicz pieces) helped pay for one of my horns.

For now, my safari has ended. Brand loyalty, force of habit, or just an empty bank account?

And by contrast, I have it and never use it. It's just a hard and fast rule that you have to play it yourself.
