I just received an email stating I am on the waitlist for the University program I very much desire to go to.
The wording from Admissions was extremely positive rather than negative which suggests to me that I have a good shot.
I'd like to hear anyone else's take on the above..
Thank you❤️ |

Sorry to hear you're on the wait list. To answer your specific question, the positive tone of your letter has nothing to do with your chances. So hope for the best, but have a back-up plan.

I hope you were advised to apply to at least three different schools: a dream school, a realistic school, and a safety school. If you didn't, start identifying other options and get in touch with those professors.
There is always route Pat Harbison took. He has written here about not getting into Bill Adam's studio at Indiana the first time. He took private lessons from Mr. Adam until such a time as he was able to audition into the studio. Maybe if you got into the university you could go in as an undeclared major and take privately, go to a local community college to do your basics and study privately, etc.
You DO have options! _________________ --Matt--

I'd encourage you to reach out and ask where you sit on the waitlist. Worst they can say is that they can't tell you, but often they will let you know which spot you are in. I was waitlisted for my top program for my master's degree and got in, especially depending on the school it's often more common than not, so don't lose hope, but as others have said absolutely have a backup plan. |

Waitlist for the University but admitted into the Music Department/School? It's a little unclear. In general there's not a lot of information to give advice on. But be prepared to pay the full cost of tuition if you get off the list.
Good luck! |

Even just getting on the wait list is quite an achievement imho. I hope you get in. The advice already given seems sensible. Good luck! _________________ 1975 Olds Recording trumpet

They all sound like that.

First off, congratulations! Based on the letter, do you understand the specifics of what it means to be wait listed by that school (rather than the general concept of being on a school's wait list)? If not, you should contact the admissions office to make sure you do understand.
Also, if you are admitted to the school, are you also automatically admitted to your program of choice?
Is this school so much better than your other options that you are willing to run the risk of not making it off of the wait list (this year)? For example, would you be willing to go to a community college for a year and try again next year?
Good luck! |

Why are we hypothesizing this? Advice could be off the mark for this young man. If he's on the wait list to get into Rice, that means one thing. If it's a waitlist to get into Jockstrap Idaho Teachers College, he needs completely different advice.
OP, what university are you talking about? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Sorry it's been so long since I responded to any post in this Thread.
I was waitlisted at University of Maryland for their DMA program.
As it unfolded last year, they kept me waiting until June then they said it was filled.
I only applied to Maryland which means I did not enter a program in the Fall.
This year is looking different.
I have been accepted into a DMA program and I am waiting to hear from Maryland as well.
So we shall see! |

Maybe this is so old it isn’t applicable. In 1971 I got wait listed to Michigan’s applied music trumpet studio, but a week later I got accepted. Perhaps somebody ahead of me went to a different school. The musician who was next on the wait list also got accepted when I switched from trumpet to Engineering after freshman year. That second wait list guy was in good position because he was enrolled at Michigan in another program. |

Congratulations. I lived and worked in the D.C. metroplex for several years and did my DMA work at Catholic University, mainly because of its extreme flexibility in scheduling. Visited College Park several times and got a good vibe. Have a great experience! _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
