I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a horn that has a patch on it and how that affects the playing... ?

I've generally avoided these, but I'm just curious as I see a fair amount of horns with things like a small patch on the main tuning slide, etc.
Thanks!

I've got a patch on the 2nd valve slide of one of my old horns. Doesn't seem to affect anything. Gotta be better than having a hole there.

Years ago I bought a Paris LeBlanc flugelhorn from Buddy Childers. He'd put a mike port in the bell. I asked Wayne Tanabe to remove it and put on a patch. Plays fine (although quite possibly not as well as it did when Buddy owned it. That doesn't have anything to do with the patch, however.)

It all depends on what is under the patch. That is the uncertain thing about buying a used horn. You don't always know what is under a patch.

I also avoid horns with patches. You just dont know how the metal is under the patch. Thats too many unknowns for me.

Hi:

My benge Burbank has one on the leadpipe next to the valves. It plays great!

My understanding from the person who sold it to me is that it was a thin spot. In any case, like I said, it plays fine!

TIm

PS (edit)...if you go to the lounge and look for an entry by me titled "More trumpet wallpapers" I have a link to a wallpaper I made there. Look at the 1280x1024 version. You should be able to see it.

Tim

My King Silver Flair has got a couple of patches (including one that is a patch on a patch!) and it still plays fantastically. One of these years I will be getting it done up properly and having these sorted out nicely, but it has worked fine for the past 12 years or so (since the first patch went on) and I expect it to keep on doing so.

I also think if it has patches and it plays great then you have nothing to worry about.. Just as long as you like it

I put a patch on my trumpet. Now it is down to half a pack a day.

NE - nice one!

This thread was in danger of becoming the only purely serious one on TH!
