Some years have past since my last visit to Chosen Vale, 2009 I believe. Mr. Stevens had been in the final stages of publishing the follow up book to the original Stamp method. I was very happy to have spent time with him outside of the everyday classes there.
The one thing I do remember him telling me while we were shopping for wine, was the best way to practice the Stamp routine was to play as quietly as possible, of course with confidence, and one thing that surprised me was his saying the use of headphones. He thought the “ideal approach” because it allowed a certain freedom from hearing ourselves entirely and that intonation was the key. He did say he used over the ear headphones and slide one back a bit so you can hear that you’re not sounding terrible.

He was a very kind man, and I think of our times there quite often. I’m happy Mr. Stevens shared that little bit of advice. It has helped me greatly.

This is a great example of why I enjoy TrumpetHerald so much: tidbits from well-respected players first hand. Thanks for sharing, trumpetbud. Very cool.

Interesting connection with studio players here--who spend their entire careers playing that way with one headphone slightly off.
