I enjoy listening to Herb Alpert. Kenny G makes me want to stick my head in wet cement.

I like his music though never thought of Herb as one of the greats on trumpet but I saw a video on YouTube of him running through an extended medley of his music I believe at some lounge just by himself, his band was taking a break. I haven't been able to re-find it but as I recall he hardly split a note, all from memory - pretty sure it was fairly recently. It was some solid playing.

I agree. Herb Alpert's music is like a cabin in a grove near a secluded beach...All fun and no worries.
Kenny G's music is like a 1200 sq.ft. apartment shared with two aunts and their 5 kids....too much and too little at the same time.

First time I saw Herb he was about 80. He played about 2 and a half hours and never seemed to tire. True, no one will ever mistake him for a technical wizard. Neither was Miles or Chet Baker. Herb communicates with an audience when he plays. Isn't that what being a musician is all about?

Evidently you haven't seen Wes Craven's, "The Last House on the Left".

Or Drew Goddard's "The Cabin in the Woods".

Have you heard, e.g
Chet on "This is the Thing"?

or Miles e.g. "So What"?

I think that to critique Herb's work as a trumpet player, you should listen to some of the stuff that he has accomplished recently, as well as his older stuff. The "pop" stuff he recorded in the 60s seems to have been largely for public consumption. The stuff he plays now seems to be more for him and shows a much different and jazz centric approach to playing with a lot of improvisation.

I really enjoyed this film having listened to a lot of Herb's music in the 70s. He truly has a great ear for music that will sell records, and has been a catalyst for countless musical careers of the late 20th century.

His approach and support for artists (in many forms) is truly inspirational.

Cheers,

'Sol Lake' said to be composer of 'Lonely Bull', was a great choice by Herb. Still sounds good now, years later.. similar to themes from Morricone in the 60's.

Pitch, sound, presence, SNL.. '75

I saw Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass many years ago (sat in Row 8 center) and he played perfectly all night- never cracked a single note. Bob Findley payed trumpet and the late Nick Ceroli was on drums.

Herb Alpert is performing with his wife, famous vocalist Lani Hall, at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland tomorrow, September 17. I have my ticket!

This was really a great watch. Thank you for posting it. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it, and we learned a lot about Herb Alpert we did not know.

I guess he missed the point of Sex Pistols. Goodbye A&M.
