I'm a trumpet teacher in Kansas City, and I'm curious about trying the "Suzuki Trumpet School Vol 1" book with some students.
Does any here on Trumpet Herald have experience teaching out of this "Suzuki Trumpet School Vol 1" book?
Would you recommend it? What is your opinion of the book compared to other beginning trumpet methods?
Thanks so much!

-Nate

I don't have any experience with Suzuki material for brass, but you might find this article interesting -
https://www.europeansuzuki.org/news/whole-new-family-of-instruments-go-suzuki/

My no-experience guess is that the Suzuki book for trumpet (and other instruments) is designed to be used with the 'Suzuki Method' of learning how to play - and the book alone is just a small part of the entire process.

Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Hi!

I'm a certified Suzuki teacher. As JayKosta surmised, the book is only a single facet of the overall Suzuki method of teaching. However, you don't need any special training to get good use out of the book: it is an excellent collection of tunes and exercises that will meet the needs of young students. The first song in the book uses only C, D, and E. By the end of the book, the range has expanded to include the whole first octave. The songs all have piano accompaniment parts, which are sold in a separate book.

And definitely get the version that includes the CD recording. It was recorded by no less than Caleb Hudson, so it's in an entirely different category than the usual "Demo CD" that most books have. The recording offers an absolutely perfect model of sound, intonation, and articulation for kids to imitate.

Trumpet Books 2, 3, and 4 are in development but are not yet available to the public.

The Suzuki Brass community is currently small (there are about a hundred teachers worldwide), but growing quickly. Some notable Suzuki brass teachers include trumpeter Stanley Curtis of Colorado State University and bass trombonist James Markey of the New England Conservatory and Boston Symphony. All of us have trained with a Swedish brass pedagogue named Ann-Marie Sundberg.

Hope this is helpful!
