Hi All

Has anyone out there tried out or bought a BAC Paseo Z72? I tried one out at a conference and really loved it and decided to put a deposit down on one and take it for a spin. Just interested to get some thoughts on the horn ! I should have the horn by Monday or Tuesday next week

Bringing this old thread forward. From the description, it's clearly based on one of the Kanstul models - anyone know which one?

From the description on retailers:

Quote:
The Z72 was designed to suit the needs of a stronger musicians who want a fuller, sonorous sound. The large bell taper lends nicely for an effortless upper register feel, while maintaining superb control in all registers. The tooling used for this instrument came from an American workshop in Anaheim, CA, and was one of the more popular Commercial Models produced among studio and session players.

My guess is it’s based on the 1600 (former WB) since it had 72-based bell. Kanstul’s other 72-bell horns were the 1503 and 1504.[/b]

I'd love to hear from the OP about how the horn turned out. BAC seems like a solid company and I hope they can continue to grow as they aspire to fill a tremendous void in our market. Nothing worth doing is easy and I'll be happy to support them when I have the opportunity.

Still playing the Z72 and enjoying it! It definitely plays like a 72 bell, more ability to change the timbre. It is a pretty responsive horn too. I have yet to take it on a gig due to the pandemic and but it sounds and feels great in my home!

Don't. Get a BACH or YAMAHA or a SCHILKE or an old BENGE or CALICCHIO. It's on! jw

So, Wilder, what is it about the BAC Paseo Z72 that you didn't like?

I played one and was also very under impressed. The blow was not even and felt very restricted in the upper register. The intonation was also quite bad and the feel of the Chinese valve block lacked the fast response under the fingers. For the money I would buy just about anything else.

That's quite interesting I tried one at TMEA last year and of all the instruments at all the booths, it felt the most open to me. The tuning was decent, a little squirrely around D/E, but which horn (that doesn't cost 4,000+) isn't. It really sang for me. Maybe an issue with the mouthpiece gap or something along those lines? The valves are my main concern, but at the same time many horns use valve blocks made overseas, just some are better than others.

I'm torn between the new Benge model and the Paseo Z72. I am hoping they bring both again this year and I can really spend some quality time with them.

I tried it with a couple different mouthpieces and next to a few other horns including a vintage 72 in decent shape and everything just felt funny and not secure on the Paseo. Maybe there was something wrong with that particular horn, but I'd go with a good shape real Benge or Bach 72 which doesn't cost $4000 or the almost $3000 for the BAC.

Are you sure about that "Chinese valve block" claim? I'm pretty sure they have the tooling, skill, and demand to make valves in house.

Why did you expect it to sound like a Bach?!

They do not make valves.

They definitely have the tooling, unless they just turned around and sold the Kanstul tooling to someone else. I think it's odd that BAC made that rather large purchase of tooling and parts and then just sat on them.
