Hi there!
I'm currently using a Conn 36B and a Yamaha 5A4 mouthpiece for lead playing
I'm finding it pretty comfortable up to about a G above high C. Above that I'm noticing it gets thin and hard to play.
I feel as though my aperture is too small when I get up high. I'm able to produce loud high G's but it gets noticeably closed off the higher I go.
What should I change? |

My idea (and I cannot play that high!) - keep using same embouchure, tongue, mouthpiece placement, etc. ...
But, around high C start using more lower lip rim pressure - the goal is a reduction in the upper lip rim pressure so the upper lip has more freedom to vibrate - not being 'locked closed' by upper lip pressure.
You do not have to actually move your jaw or teeth or the mouthpiece position or angle , just feel the rim pressure shifting for slightly more pressure on the lower, the upper should react in response. _________________ Most Important Note ? - the next one !
KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

(Says with a slow Southern drawl) Well, ah may not know much about it, but . .
I never bothered with anchoring on the bottom lip or using much pressure. I worked mainly with The Balanced Embouchure and Maggio. Range to Double High C.
YMMV
Regarding the OP specifically, I would do Long Tones cresc. & decresc. and work into and out of the stratosphere. Again-Caruso. I found his Seconds and Thirds helpful.
Check out Matcus Stockhausen's Caruso exercises. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
