Anyone use a different mouthpiece for their c trumpet as opposed to a Bb? Just curious.

I use a different backbore for C than I do for Bb, but otherwise it's the same. _________________ www.milanomusic.com |

I tend to use:
1. same rim
2. slightly deeper cup
3. more open backbore (depends on horn) _________________ More than one trumpet

I use the same mouthpiece on C as I do for concert band / classical playing on B flat, i.e. a B cup with an open backbore (an Austin Custom Brass 1B). My C sounds a bit too bright/shrill with a C cup mouthpiece, IMO. _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

Warburton now makes backbores optimized for C trumpet in all of their larger standard sizes. Players who use Warburton or Warburton-compatible tops might want to check them out.

AR Resonance 40XS and 40S backbore on Bb (exceptions on L backbore)
AR Resonance 40L backbore on C
Identical ME40 top on all.
So, same top/cup, more open backbore on C. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Same rim, slightly deeper cup, larger throat and larger backbore.
For my Bb, I use a CD cup, which is midway between a Bach C and D cup. That's great for my Bb work, but too bright on the C trumpet. I use a C cup for that, or even a CB cup if I am playing lower parts. I suspect I am in the minority by using a different cup, but I always go with the tool that is best for the job. |

Are your C and your Bb very similar in feel? Are they different?
How do you want them to be?
Lots of questions to be answered before any advice is useful.
Me: For my Kanstul C, I use the same mouthpiece I use for my Yamaha Bb.
For my Schilke C, I use the same rim and cup as my Schilke Bb, but different backbore. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS, Yamaha YTR-6335S

As a Monette player, I’ve always used a different mouthpiece for different keyed horns. This typically means that I’m playing the same rim and cup from horn to horn, but the backbore length and other physical aspects of the design have been balanced to match the pitch of a given instrument, i.e., C mpcs are shorter than Bbs, but longer than Ds. That said, I typically play a large, deep orchestral mouthpiece on C, but I also have a more medium-deep cup on the same rim for all-around Bb playing.

Yeah, I do, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't. I don't play C much these days. But even if I were to use 2 different B flat trumpets I would probably use a different mouthpiece on each. Dialing in gear is kind of fun, and horns respond differently to different mouthpieces! |
