I'm aware the Breathing Gym has been around for some time. I only discovered it in the last few years, and it has helped me. Wish I knew about it when I was getting started.

A question for music educators...
Is there a recommended way to introduce the Breathing Gym to middle-school aged students? I wanted to introduce the breathing exercises to a young family member [who recently took up the trumpet], but their lungs may not be fully formed at that age.

Just do it if you want to do it. At middle school age, many future pro endurance athletes are already hitting it hard. Their lungs are totally capable.

If they are really bad at the coordination, then leave it on the backburner for 6 months and try again. Somatic awareness is a little difficult before/during puberty (in my experience).

OP probably meant breathing gym as he talks about breathing and lungs.

Yes, I made a typo. Breathing Gym is what I meant. I think Patrick Sheridan also has a follow-up product called the Brass Gym.

So, not to cheat anybody out of a buck but . . . Why pay forty bucks for the book Brass Class when there are YouTube videos by the same people om the same topic, for free?

I’ve used breathing gym with elementary bands. There’s more to it’s than just breathing. It is for calming, focus, attention, etc. One can use Stamp breathing exercises, or make up your own.

Fr me, the most important part is to NOT use a video, but to direct it oneself.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy,

How do you sell the early student on the benefits on of breathing gym? It's been so long since I was a middle school student that it's difficult to remember how our band director got us learning.

If you have to sell, something is wrong. Teaching a way to warm up and play better is a no brainer.

All our ensembles warm up. Part of it is to play better, but a lot is to get the brains engaged. Actively engaged kids play better. Kids that feel they can play easily (warmed up and engaged) will enjoy their playing and taking on challenges.

Another aspect is to use play to learn. I don't nail it all the time (or even most of the time) but kids feeling like they are playing (not music) in a game tend to learn faster and better. When they get it, then ensembles - strings, band, etc all sound pretty amazing.

Breathing gym is a tool to achieve this, both mentally and physically.

cheers

Andy
