Good Grief !

What in the world is going on, what with the way people are dressed, now-a-days?

People (young, old, middle-aged, children, adolescents, adults, elderly) just do not seem to care to put much/any thought into how they appear in public.
Have they forgotten the value of being well-dressed? Studies have shown well-dressed people are more confident, and respected.

Does that no longer matter?

I shall refrain (for now) from citing examples.
(You may choose ... or, not ... to provide your own).

Define "well-dressed".

Provide examples in a cultural context.

I'm from Hawai`i. Our "national dress" is Aloha and T- shirts and slacks/jeans/shorts. Practically nothing above that low common denominator. You usually can't tell the difference between socio-economic differences. Some find it threatening, others refreshing.

Sounds like a first-world problem to me.

Either it doesn't matter to them, or it matters in ways that other people don't understand.

Being a retired power plant engineer (day job) and currently living in a small rural Texas town looking after the family farm, "well dressed" for me is a clean Carhartt T-shirt and clean cargo pants, and formal wear means a shirt with some type of buttons! 🥸

I shall leave you to research that via the Internet.
I prefer to stay out of the fray, for the time being, and see what trending
comments indicate.

(Nice try richmanwisco. I won't take the bait.)

No. Not recently. I haven't recovered from my previous visit.

* [Spoiler alert]

I sometimes go out in public wearing shabby bib overalls over a holey T-shirt. Usually, a trip to the local auto-parts store (Pep Boys, O'Reilley, NAPA, AutoZone, Sears, etc.) ... while I'm in the middle of changing oil, rotating tires, changing belts/hoses on one of my vehicles ... and, I have likely just come out from under one of them. Hence; I'm a bit dirty.

I prefer NOT to "stop by the grocery store" for a few items, as requested by G/F (who is a former runway model in NYC); lest I embarrass myself. Never know who you're gonna run into. She says my Rolex will give me away, anyhow. I now wear my vintage 84+year old Hamilton. Less ostentatious.

Except that you were the one who asked (or rather, begged) the question. Be that as it may, the later responses in this thread essentially echoed my terse response. And that is that "well dressed" is a vague term that means whatever the viewer wants it to mean. What is well dressed for one, is slovenly to another. Back in ye olden days, folks would spend well above their means in the pretense of fitting some cultural norm. I'm happy that we don't have to worry about that now.

Cheers,
Rich

So you are the devil in disguise???

Tell you a short story: Back in the day I owned a(used)Mercedes 250 SE, the one and only from 1967. Supernice big big shiny extremely expensive looking car. So one day I ran out of petrol (with that car it happened quite often) and entered very solemnly the gas station of the town. Drove up to the pump while watching in the mirror the station attendant flinging the station door open, literally throwing himself at my car. And then I opened the door, put my two clogs on the ground, my legs dressed in a pair of jeans shortly after. He came to a screetching halt and tried to walk back in looking as if nothing had happened.

Poor humanity.

* Back story ~

I was voted "Best Dressed" in my graduating class ... as was my eldest daughter in her graduating class, some 25+ years later.
She had NO coaching from me, at all. She was "her own person" ... had an excellent sense of style and decorum.

I enjoyed wearing cut-off jeans and a holey T-shirt at the local country club, while playing in tennis tournaments.
I usually thrashed my opponents, who were be-decked in the proper Fred Perry or Izod "whites".
I was club champion several years running; singles and doubles.

I can relate. Had a 1970 M-B 280SE Cabriolet (5-passenger convertible). Silver, over blue leather, blue soft-top.

"Not in my yard..." style rants are always amusing, if only for showing how much people hate change, especially as they get older.

I don't really care how other people dress, as long as I don't have to look at them.

Yeah I am definitely getting a boomer vibe here. (I am a tail end boomer myself)

I've come to realize that dressing nicely affects me psychologically. Even though I work remotely, I have been trying to dress more professionally in order to improve my own self-image.

Excellent attitude !

All too many seem to believe "The Dude" (The Big Lebowski) exemplifies the typical All-American, laid-back lifestyle they admire so much.
