Hi all,
I am digging back into my Claude Gordon materials, as I have recently been using the Goldman Daily Embouchure Studies (which are funny enough a lot like Systematic Approach), and have some questions.
I am wondering when to include the Systematic Approach and Daily Trumpet Routines in my day (along with all of the other things I'm working on). For me personally, starting the day with the SA seems like a lot, but it's not very different from how Goldman prescribes his routine. Perhaps the DTR are more reasonable to start the day with?
Also, another question regarding SA; I noticed that Claude mentions a Pedal Routine before Lesson One. If I were to use SA first thing, would it be best to start the day with pedal tones as he talks about and then continue to the lesson, or would it be better to start directly with Lesson Two as I have read elsewhere?
Thanks in advance for your insights! |

I'm taking lessons with a CG Certified teacher (John Mohan). First, I would recommend at least doing a lesson or two with someone who studied with CG (more is better). If that isn't an option, try doing the SA exactly as written for a while (including supplemental material from the books recommended in each lesson).

If you start with SA, just start with SA. No need to do any preliminary or other warmup. I did that for a while before I started lessons and it works just fine. Start with Lesson 2 if you don't have trouble playing pedals. Part I will get things loosened up and the blood and air flowing.
I would also recommend consuming some of the audio and video of CG explaining how to do SA that Jeff Purtle has compiled and posted on his website. Jeff's videos are great, as well, and they're on YouTube.
Caveat: I'm not an authority. I'm sure Jeff or John or others will correct any errors in my comments. Best wishes! _________________ Rob Thomson
