Dry Lips vs Wet lips

Who plays on Dry lips and who plays on wet lips? Pros cons? I think I’ve always played on wet lips. Maybe when I first started I played on dry but as long as I can remember I’ve always licked my lips!

I personally feel like there's a fine line. I can hardly make a sound on really dry lips, same with very wet lips. I typically prefer to lick my lips, take a big swig of water, and then lightly dab off my lips with my sleeve.

I used to try to keep my chops fairly dry, but when I started playing sweaty club gigs I had to learn to play on pretty slick chops. At this point I don't think about it too much -- as long as I avoid the extremes (there's always lip balm or your sleeve) my chops seem to work.

I play with dry lips. Generally works fine for me, but there are situations when your lips are going to be wet -- performances when it is hot and you are sweating, or when it is cold and you are getting condensation on your mouthpiece, or in the rain -- and that's when I wish I played with wet lips.

I occasionally wet my lips when I am practicing to ensure I have enough "survival" skills to be able to make it to the next rest if my lips become wet during a performance.

I have friends who play dry and wet. The only con exists in the "dry" category, which is, you must keep them dry when your mouth and other things are wet. No cons for wet.

I will say this though, the cats that play wet do well on gold-plated pieces. I can't play on gold due to allergies; I play with a dry top lip and "moist" bottom lip.
