For all sorts of reasons I'll be practicing using a gifted Yamaha SB 7x silent brass system for a short while. This is not what I normally do, but that's just the case.
I can't work out how to play my backing tracks through it from my laptop as a source.
Any help much appreciated thanks.

I don't know if this will help specifically with your question, but I use a FiiO K3 DAC (digital audio converter) to play digital sound files from my computer through my stereo system. Sounds great. I'm not sure how the Yamaha would hook up to a laptop, but you should be able to listen via Bluetooth earbuds or headphones. My DAC has a headphone jack. Hope this helps!

You're welcome! Let us know what you end up using.

And to clarify, you can use the DAC simply as a headphone amplifier from your laptop or computer without connecting it to a stereo.

Audio cable from your laptop headphone jack to the Aux In on the Silent brass unit should work.

As the last writer said, I, too, plug the silent brass directly into my computer headphone jack, which feeds into the audio in jack of the silent brass. I then pull up YouTube, Learn Jazz Standards, and play along with them. Guaranteed to give you a workout.

The issue I have with the Silent Brass is it is very stuffy. After a while I have to remove the mute and "re-center" my sound and airstream. The stuffiness of the mute plays with the pitch of the instrument and if you're not careful, you wind up pulling the tuning slide in, then out, then in again and pretty soon you don't know where the pitch is centered on your horn. I've used different headphone sets with mixed results.

I anyone knows of a solution to the stuffiness, let me know.

Depending on the SB model, the amplifier unit may have also a mini-USB jack that can be connected to the computer via a USB cable.
