Learn your scales and chords from the top down, inside out, in all intervals, melodic patterns. Like a language, the better you practice it the better story you can tell with it. |

For some time now, practicing scales means for me to look for the melodies hidden inside the scale.
I run away from mechanical exercises and look for melodies with meaning. _________________ Notice!!! Amateur musician without formal studies

And if that wasn't enough, LOL, while I acknowledge the necessity (and short cutting) of the above, I also used a lot of passing tones that didn't fit the orthodox scale/chord constructions, for interest and something new. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Knowing all your scales and chords is like a painter getting his paints together. The language of music requires the basics to be learned well, that way you have more language to use in your conversation on stage. |
