Hello all,

First post here.

I live in a condo so that means that unfortunately I must use a practice mute from time to time. My Wick mute is good except for the intonation.

Can anyone suggest a mute that has better intonation?

Thanks.

The Stomvi Up Mute has a better intonation and a freer air passage than my previous studio mute, a Best Brass.

I have owned or tried every practice mute available, and my favorite is probably the $40 Faxx mute.

It’s the same size as the best brass, but considerably freer blowing, and works up and down the register.

Thanks to you both for the recommendations.

I am wondering about the Divitt mute. Can anyone tell me what that is like?

Although for the price that Faxx mute looks interesting.

Thanks for the link kehaulani. Unfortunately they didn't review the Divitt mute or the Faxx. I am curious about those two.

I travel for a living so I'm constantly in a hotel room. The only way for me to practice is with a practice mute.
I use the Sshh mute and it works great. Very quiet. Definitely my choice.
Although, as with every practice (silencing) mute, it's stuffy. Botton line, you'll never find a mute that takes the place of an open horn; In blow, intonation, etc.
Practice mutes are out of necessity, not choice.
I play local productions so I don't have a choice. I've got to work through the music and keep my chops in shape. Period.
It has not affected my playing when switching to an open horn (when at home or performance) in the least.
My 2 cents.

I also live in a condo. Tried lots of practice mutes and hated them all. Saw a suggestion to get one of these:

I stuffed a throw blanket inside it, and haven't gone near a practice mute since. It's as quiet as you need it to be, with no back pressure. Just restricts your movement obviously.

The Divitt mute is one of the best options for a home practice mute. Intonation is good, blow is not too restricted, and sound is considerably reduced.

Not my favorite for travel simply because it takes up more room in a suitcase than any of my other practice mutes.

I am still a fan of the Wallace Studio Mute. It's like a really soft harmon mute, but fairly free blowing. The Wick is by far my least favorite as it it backs up pretty easily and doesn't give feedback to how you're actually playing.

Thanks for this. I am really leaning towards this one. I just have to find time to head to the Divitt shop as they are not open weekends.

My wife bought me one of these and does not like to be in the room if I’m practising high range! I’m quite happy with how it plays. I was using a Yamaha original silent brass which tames the high end far more, but isn’t as free blowing. Pondering the Wallace compact in order to practice plunger.

I've tried the Divitt and the Faxx as well as others that are mentioned on this thread. I can't stand a little Harmon-mute buzz so that eliminates some. I live in a home where sound is not well tolerated so volume control is my priority. I have tried a ton of mutes and the Best Brass Junior is the quietest I've found.

There is certainly no shortage of mutes (and horns and mouthpieces) to choose from.

There really are some impressive practice mutes around. It looks like you have your eyes on some nice ones. While I may be late to the party, I did want to add my thoughts and/or options.

I'm on the road in Hotels four to five nights a week, and for about 8 years or so I've carried the same Wallace Studio practice mute with me. It's not cheap but it is an impressive mute. It has a resistor, which operates a bit like the removable piece of a Harmon mute, but this resistor is small. Still, when removed - I feel no backpressure at all and I've used it 'open' like this in Hotels often. With the resistor in, the mute is extremely quiet and the back pressure is certainly livable, still not bad. I'll attach a vid, it may prove beneficial.

Good luck with your decision - and keep us informed!

I bought the Mark Hughes mute a couple of years ago.

It's still a practice mute, but when I bought it I liked it more than others I had tried. It's bulky, but it has a plug you can take out to adjust resistance and sound dampening.

My cat loves her one of these lol. I'd never thought of playing a trumpet into it, but I can see how this will work. Very interesting idea!

Take care and best wishes

Actually I could use it during the day and put it out at night for my outside cat.
