Yes, something like that. Like "out of about 20 horns of the same model this one would stand out amongst the rest".
Could be some hyperbole, but it does play very well. |

I am down to 2 Bb horns. For the type of playing I do now, either horn would work, but in my quest to have a responsive lively, crisp, sound with sparkle and a clear ringing tone, I use my Schilke B6b. I could use my Wild Thing, but for the sound profile I am working towards, the B6b seems to work better for now.

I just received my custom Adams A-9. . .
Well, so much for that. Too much arm droop. Back to the Yamaha Shew.

There aren't many 3X players left, it seems. Carl Saunders is gone. Many players who used to play them have moved on to other horns. Or, like Carl, they're no longer alive. |

It's actually a little heavier than I remember it being when I ordered it but, still, lighter than my Benge. Whadayagonnado? I'll just work out with it and see how it goes. Lighter than a Benge not as light as a Yamaha Shew.

Bach 190S37.. Because is sounds great in every situation. The sound doesn't pail away in a large room, nor in a large ensemble, it keeps its tone when pushed and when played softly. It's still the sound that others try to achieve. Which has been reinforced by the musicians I work with - I've played other trumpets from time to time - every time I pull the 37 back out someone (unprompted) says "...you sound good today..."
Over 40 years of performing, I've played a wide variety of trumpets always returning to a ML37 (worn out a couple)

The Bach 190-37, for me, is my ideal "Goldilocks" horn. Had one briefly. It was just too heavy for me, and I had to use an ErgoBrass support and that was just a PITA, so got rid of the horn. But . . . it's killer.

Proud to be the first one to reply with a Shires. Model AZS8. Full of life and color, great response and very open sound. I love this horn more than any other Bb because it has an amazingly resonant sound from the big low F all the way up to double C. I use it as my exclusive Bb for orchestral playing, big band and fundamental practice. (I use the 401C in the orchestra for C trumpet.)
I've been doing this professionally for 25 years and I've tried everything. Other great horns that I've played have been my original Bach 37 from 1988, Mt Vernon ml 43 (currently for sale on ebay serial# 21250) and the Benge MLP.

After trying many horns over the years I had the chance to play a Bach 25 and it is perfect for my set-up. I love the feel, the sound and the ease of getting around on it.

Flip Oakes Wild Thing Bb with 4 of Mark Curry's mouthpieces that Mark designed and milled to play in tune with the horn.
From lead trumpet parts to cornet parts, no matter what music a director puts on your stand, the Wild Thing can morph into whatever you need it to become.
A shame that Kanstul liquidated and Flip retired.

I find this thread really interesting (thanks, Louise, for starting it) because when going through it, I do seem to extract from the posts that most of us really don’t change that much in terms of their fav instruments. Rather they stick to one or two setups.
There is a current thread on the German TF on mouthpieces going along the same general direction and also there it seems that the „never (or rarely) change a running system“ concept has been adopted by a large number of the posters.
This got me thinking should I get rid of some more stuff (on the fence about the Buescher and an Olds Studio cornet visiting the house right now) as I’m never playing some gear anyway.
I could easily do with two Bb, the C, and the flugel (the latter getting playtime about twice a year for eight bars or so). The rest really doesn’t add to playing, just to the „cool“ and „want“ aspects of trumpet gear.

OK, now you’ve triggered me 😂😂😂 Tested a couple Kanstuls and always put them away because I didn’t like the valves. Not really clunky, but odd - can’t quite put the finger on what exactly I didn’t like. My Bach on the contrary 💪 (but not as nice as the valves on my Conn and the Zirnbauers on the rotary). Goes to show again that we are all different.
